When it comes to being in great shape, nerds tend to get a bad rap. Maybe we prioritize reading comics or playing video games over going out for a run, but there’s more to health than how good you are at sports. Keeping your brain in tip-top shape is just as important, whether that’s in terms of intelligence, sharpness, or mental wellbeing. With that said, we’ve brought together lots of ways that self-professed nerds can keep their bodies and their minds healthy, in ways that are actually enjoyable.

Learn The Rules of a New Game

Taking part in novel activities can help to stave off the early signs of memory loss, particularly if those activities involve learning a set of rules or procedures. Picking up a new game is a great way to do this and there’s nothing us nerds love more than an excuse to game. Casino games can be a good place to start as there’s an enormous variety of them and you can start with the simple ones and work your way up to the more complex.

Whether you want to get deep into poker strategy, get cracking straight away with a game of Blackjack, or want to learn something like Sic-Bo that is more popular in Asian cultures, there’s plenty to choose from and you can get as deep into the numbers side of it as you want. Of course, if you’re a real nerd-puritan then you can always opt for a board game instead. If you’ve never played Dungeons and Dragons before then this is the time. It’s for your health!

Create Healthy Anime Food

There’s something about the food from a whole lot of anime series that is just mouth-watering. Watching feasts appear, or gazing longingly as one of our favourite characters slurps up a bowl of ramen is a joyous pastime for many of us, but have you ever considered actually making the food? Whilst some of the food that is depicted isn’t exactly health food, a lot of food from Japan is very healthy.

Japanese food tends to comprise of plenty of fresh vegetables, a small amount of carbohydrates, like rice, and a small amount of protein, often fish. These groups form the building blocks to most healthy diets, so choosing an anime that you love and zooming in on the food in it could be a fun way to kick-start a healthy diet. We’re always told that breakfast is the most important meal of the day, so why not make tomorrow your starting point with a delicious rolled omelet and some beautifully cut fruit.

LARP Around

There are a growing number of LARPing groups out there and if you’re lucky you’ll be able to find one really local to you. If you don’t get so lucky then maybe this is your calling to set one up yourself. Not only is the actual role-playing great fun and good exercise, but getting your creative juices flowing with costume making can be a great boost to your mental health. Encouraging our minds to be creative can help us to think about the problems that we face in life in a different way. It may sound like a simple solution to a complex problem and that’s because it is. Often people who suffer with their nerves are thinking about things in the wrong way. Once you engage the creative side of your brain you can often figure out a problem more easily. The more you engage your creative brain with activities like costume making, the more easy it is in times of stress.
