Is Your Most Valuable Jewelry Secure In A Safe?

There is a fine line when it comes to owning jewelry. While you desperately want to protect it from thieves, you also want to be able to access it. For this reason, putting your jewelry in a safety deposit box at the bank is simply not an option. It defeats the purpose of owning jewelry entirely.

However, this means that expensive jewelry is going to need a secure space at your home. No matter how secure your home is, your jewelry just won’t be anywhere near as safe as it would be at the bank. You will have to get as close as possible, while organizing the right insurance. Find out how to insure a ring so that you know how to go about it.

The first question you need to ask is if your jewelry is secure in a safe. From there, we can figure out how to improve your security.

Is a safe secure enough?

The simple answer to this question is no. On its own, a safe is not secure enough. A safe can be broken into with enough time and the right tools. The kinds of safes that cannot be broken into are going to be much more expensive than what you want to protect.

However, we are not looking at a safe on its own. At the very least, your front door provides the first line of protection. Let’s consider a portable safe in an average home.

The problem with a portable safe is that, in a pinch, a burglar can carry the whole thing off. They don’t need to break into it in your home, as they will have time once they’ve returned to their base.

In order to prevent this, you can either get a big, heavy safe that is almost impossible to carry off, or do the following things. Secure your safe against a part of the home that is foundational. Use strong materials and weld metal rather than hammering or screwing in nails. Find creative ways to hide where the safe is kept. This entirely depends on your home, and it may be under the floorboards, behind a painting, or somewhere totally unexpected.

The balance, again, is finding a place that is not difficult to access. If you hide your safe behind your built-in oven, you’re never going to wear your jewelry.

Secure your home

Ideally, burglars will never get anywhere near your safe. The reality is that the best protection is a good home security system. And you should have one of these regardless of whether you have expensive jewelry to protect.

In the US, burglaries happen all the time. Some of them are opportunities, in that they see an unsecured home and take a chance. But many of them are planned, and your basic security measures may not be enough.

A good security system provides you with an alarm that immediately alerts your local security service or police department, strong mechanisms to lock your doors and windows, cameras, and a mobile app that allows you to access those cameras.

This all should go a long way towards keeping intruders out of your home. If they cannot get beyond the door without you and the police becoming aware, they won’t get into your safe before they’re caught.

Often, intruders are most able to get into your home when you are there. After all, you cannot alarm the inside of your home if you are moving around. Find a way to arm the areas of your home that you are not using when you sleep and don’t forget to do so.

A safe is not secure enough on its own to protect your most valuable jewelry. However, that does not mean you should resort to methods that keep your jewelry out of your own reach. Secure your safe inside your home to a wall or pillar. Make sure it is hidden in a place that thieves are unlikely to look. And always keep your home secure so that they do not get in in the first place.

Of course, don’t forget to insure your most valuable jewelry. Ultimately, you cannot account for every eventuality, especially when you decide to wear your jewelry in public.
