Mahlagha, what was it like growing up in Iran?

I lived in Tehran until I was 18 years old. I am very blessed that my childhood was full of good memories. I was constantly surrounded by family and friends with lots of get‐togethers, in the company of relatives and neighbors. It was a fun group environment!

How do you think that shaped the person you have become?

My past and present are intimately linked to my memories. Events in my childhood and early adulthood have shaped the way I think, act, and interact with people close to me. A good time for me today still revolves around family and friends. I proactively try to incorporate the people I love into my life’s activities, to enjoy each other’s company and to celebrate life.

Was your journey into the modeling industry difficult?

I think every journey has its ups and downs. I’ve definitely come a long way and have learned from the good and bad of the modeling industry. I have been through a lot and appreciate the challenges that have helped make me a better person and model. I value the good times and I am grateful for my successful journey.

Do you face criticism from people in Iran?

I am not aware of any criticism. The people from Iran have always been so kind and very supportive of me. I try to stay away from any drama and/or negative opinions. Of course, everyone is entitled to their perspective of me, but I don’t go out and look for negative press. I believe that the less I say in public, the less people have to talk about. I am a very private person and the people that know me best are the ones that I am closest to and that is what is most important to me.

Your original career background was leading you towards mathematics and physics. Can you tell us a little about this and why you chose to step away from this to become a model?

In Iran, the career options revolve around becoming a physician, an attorney, or an engineer. I studied Mathematics and Physics, because I enjoyed the courses and was interested in becoming an engineer. While in school, I started a few social media accounts for fun and received a lot of interest from brands requesting to work with me on modeling projects. I had an amazing experience at my first shoot and never looked back.

Many influencers can come off entitled; however, you are so sweet. Does your kind nature work well for you in today’s self-centered society? Do you think it helps you with your career?

Thank you for your kind words. That is very important to me in a world where I feel compassion is lacking. I genuinely believe that nothing can change your true self and personality. It all depends on who you are, your upbringing, and most importantly, your values. I think we are all unique in our own ways, but we attract similar energy to our own self. I try to surround myself with kind, positive energy and work best with people that feel and carry themselves the same.

You’ve worked with many major global brands. Do you have any specific memories or brand partnerships that stand out to you that you would like to tell us about?

I get this question a lot, and throughout the years, with all of my different and exciting experiences, the best partnership that comes to my mind is still the Philipp Plein shoot in Milan, Italy. He went above and beyond on all aspect of the project. I will forever be grateful for that experience and will treasure the fun, good memories.

Tell us about your favorite red-carpet experience. What makes it so special to you?

The Cannes and Venice Film Festivals were absolutely magical! They are both very dear to me because I had the opportunity to work with the most incredible and talented people in the industry. Despite all of the star power at these red carpets, it was very special to still be treated with respect. I was surrounded by kind and loving people, which is very important to me.

What made you set your eye on acting as a next career step?

I love movies! I pay more attention to acting skills, than the actual stories while watching movies. I’ve always been interested in understanding and learning the actors’ different techniques. When I had an opportunity to audition in front of a Casting Director, she saw great upside in my natural abilities. I then realized that I had the potential to become an actress. I have been taking acting lessons from an acting coach to help improve my techniques. I am grateful that acting could be a great opportunity to take my career to the next level and continue to do all the creative things I love most in life.
