Calla lilies are perhaps the classiest and the most elegant flowers on earth, which symbolize harmony, purity and innocence. This is one of the reasons why they are so often used for wedding decorations, the bridal bouquets and, of source, for wedding cake decorations. The next advantage of this flower as a cake decorating detail is the relative simplicity and little work required to make calla lilies from sugarpaste, which is why even the beginners can have a perfect outcome when decorating wedding cakes with gum paste calla lilies. Today, we bring this gumpaste calla lily flower tutorial, teaching you the easiest methods for making calla lilies from the modelling paste!
How to Make Gumpaste Calla Lily Flowers
Arum or calla lilies usually come in a variety of colors, ranging from orange, pink and red to yellow, green and even black. However, white calla lilies are the most common types used, especially when it comes to wedding cake decorations. The flower shown here is a typical classic white calla lily, however, if you want to inject drama into your cake decoration, you can go for any other bright color you like most of all.
For making such calla lilies from sugarpaste, you’ll need to have the following products and tools:
White, yellow and green gumpaste (or only a white one and yellow and green gel colorings)
A leaf and a heart shape cutter
A green paper floristry tape
White and green floral wires
Small fondant rolling pin
A fine brush and a small paintbrush
Calla flower former
A leaf shaping modelling tool
Yellow and green powder colorings
Step 1: Start rolling out the white gumpaste thinly. Using the heart shape cutter, cut out a heart. In case you don’t have a heart shape cutter, you can use a paper heart template or a sharp knife, cutting the gumpaste in the heart shape.
Step 2: Take the heart shaped gumpaste and wrap it around your thumb or index finger. Apply a bit of gum glue to the edge and stick it to the flower, getting the ideal calla lily shape. Place it on the calla lily flower former and let it dry for some 30 minutes.
Step 3: To make the center of the flower, take a small amount of yellow gumpaste, knead it a bit and roll it in between the palm of your hands, making a tapered log. Take a white floral wire, dip it into the gum glue and insert it into the gumpaste flower center.
Step 4: Mix a bit of granulated sugar with edible yellow powder coloring. Apply some gum glue on the entire length of the flower center and roll it in the yellow granulated sugar to give the ideal texture of the calla lily center to it. Hang the center in a rack and let it dry completely.
Step 5: Now, it’s time to make the calla lily leaves. You need to roll out green gumpaste thinly and using the leaf shape cutter cut out a leaf. Ruffle the edges of the leaf using a cone modelling tool or your fingers. Using the leaf shaping modelling tool draw some lines on the leaf. Finally dip a flower fire into the gum glue and insert it into the tip of the leaf, and place it on a flower former set, letting it dry completely. As it’s dry, you can dust the leaf with a tiny amount of green powder coloring.
Step 6: Take a small amount of green modelling paste, knead it a bit and roll it into a cone shape. Make a small hole into it using a star modelling tool.
Step 7: As all the particles are dry, take the white calla lily and dust the inside with green and yellow powder colorings. Take the flower center, apply some gum glue on its bottom part and carefully insert it into the calla lily cone. Apply some glue on the part of the calla lily where it meets the wire and stick the green cone to it. Tape some green paper floristry tape to make the wire look more realistic and thicker. Tape in the leaf and the dreamy gumpaste calla lily flower is ready!
Using the same techniques you can make as many calla lilies as you need for decorating your cake. Surely you can also make different colors of calla lilies and get a fantasy bouquet for your wedding or party cake!
