The multi-talented singer, actress, and fashion icon once again proved that she is not your average celebrity. After being honored by Harvard for her charitable work, Rihanna has made it clear she wants to leave an even greater impact and help many more people around the world. She just announced a future collaboration with the famous designer Donna Karan‘s Urban Zen Foundation and renowned art school The New School’s Parsons School of Design. The mission of this collaboration is to create a line that will benefit the children of Haiti.
The young superstar has collaborated with the Parsons School of Design before, by supporting many of their students and wearing their designs. This time, the sales from all of the products will go to the Clara Lionel Foundation, which was established by Rihanna in 2012. The foundation has helped many communities around the world achieve better education and healthcare. The partnership between the two foundations (Urban Zen and Clara Lionel) aims to bring positive changes to many people’s lives.
The chosen students from the design school will have the opportunity to work with designers Donna Karan and Paula Coles for six to eight weeks starting in June 2017. The designers have already set up a training location in Port-au-Prince, where the students will work alongside many Haitian artists to create a unique collection. This center, known as the Design, Organization, Training (D.O.T.) Center, has been active since 2015 and has helped many local artists with their work by providing education, resources and materials.
“We are ecstatic that our students will have the opportunity to work with and develop a merchandise line for Rihanna’s Clara Lionel Foundation, that, like Parsons, shares a strong commitment to creating positive social change,” Alison Mears, director at the Healthy Materials Lab at Parsons, said in a statement.
“Through this partnership with Donna Karan and Urban Zen, students will live Parsons’ mission, taking a multidisciplinary collaborative approach and utilizing local sustainable practices and healthier materials to create products that benefit Haiti and the Clara Lionel Foundation.’
Rihanna will announce the three lucky winners on May 22, when she is expected to attend the Parsons Benefit in New York. Donna Karan will also be present at the event, after being honored last year at the same event.
