How to Make Gumpaste Lily of the Valley
As always, the most important factor about making gumpaste flowers is having the necessary products and tools at hand, or else having enough skills for all the cutting, ruffling and designing techniques to do it all without tools. Nevertheless, these are what you will need to get:
Yellow and green gumpaste (or a white one and yellow and green food coloring)
A leaf shape cutter
3 different sizes of a flower shape cutter
A glue for cake decorating
A rolling pin
A green paper floristry tape
Edible powder colors and glitter
White and green floral wires
A cone & star modelling tool
A leaf shaping modelling tool
The steps of the gumpaste lily of the valley tutorial go as follows!
Step 1: If you have ready-made yellow flower modelling paste, start rolling it out. Otherwise, you’ll need to add a few drops of gel food coloring to the white gumpaste and knead it well until getting a smooth paste. Next, again start rolling it out thinly. Cut out three different graduating sizes of the same flower shape.
Step 2: From the same yellow gumpaste roll small balls in different four graduating sizes. Cut the green floral wires. Hook one end of the wires with the pliers and dip this end into the food glue. Then you need to insert the hooked wires into each ball.
Step 3: Apply a tiny amount of food glue to the tips of the balls and stick the cut-out flowers on each one, paying attention to the sizes and attaching the biggest flowers to the biggest balls accordingly. The smallest ball needs to be left bare, without any flower on the tip. Take the star modelling tool and hollow out the center of the flower with it. You then need to let the flowers along with the small balls completely dry out at room temperature. You need to make three tiny balls, and three flowers of each size for one stem.
Step 4: Now, it’s time to make the leaves of the flowers, two for each stem. Roll out the green gumpaste thinly. Cut out leaf shapes using the leaf shape cutter or just sharp knifes. Ruffle the edges of the leaves with the cone modelling tool. Next, start drawing the leaf lines with the leaf shaping tool Place the ready leaves on a wavy flower former set and let them dry out at room temperature to get the slightly bended form. As the leaves are completely dry, take a darker green powder food coloring and slightly dust the central part of the leaves with a paintbrush to make them look more authentic.
Step 5: Now, it’s time to attach all the balls, flowers and leaves to the stem. For this you need to take a longer white flower wire, tape it with the smallest bare bud using the green paper floristry tape. Continue taping in the next two yellow buds, leaving a small amount of each of their stems showing. Start taping in the flowers starting with the smallest size and going to the graduating sizes. You need to tape in three buds of the each flower size, again leaving a short stem on each. All the buds and flowers should be taped in in the same direction and not randomly. Finally, tape in the two leaves in the same manner.
Step 6: Using the pliers, gently bend each of the buds and flowers down. Slightly curve the whole stem. Dust the buds and the flowers with a food flitter using a paintbrush and you are done!
Making a gumpaste lily of valley is perhaps one of the easiest and most exciting ways of creating lovely decorative details for your cake. You can make the same flowers from white sugarpaste too or any other color the flower usually comes in.
