The Jowissa Roma: Proof a Swiss Watch Doesn’t Need to Shout

Most watches that land in my mailbox are trying to grab attention — oversized cases, busy dials, a finish designed to catch the eye in a photo more than on a wrist. There’s a difference, and after wearing it for a couple of weeks, that difference is exactly what I’ve come to like about it.

Jowissa is a Swiss family brand that’s been making watches since 1951, and it’s probably best known for its sparklier pieces — the ones with diamond-cut faceted glass that throw light around like jewelry. Plenty of watch brands lean on a founding date as a marketing prop. Jowissa is genuinely still family-run — third generation now, with the founder’s grandson at the helm of a company his grandparents started in a small Swiss village. The brand recently hit its 75th anniversary. What that family-scale operation actually translates to, for a buyer, is a brand that still cares about small details and after-sales service in a way the big conglomerates often don’t. What the Roma Actually Is
