A Guide to Practicing Self-care On the Go

If your life feels like it’s unfolding at breakneck pace, with work and family commitments seeming to fill every available hour of the day, then you might find yourself struggling to find time to care for yourself.

Fortunately, it’s often easy to find time for wellness, even if you lead a busy lifestyle. There are a few tips and tricks worth looking at.

Mindful Moments During Your Day

The first thing to bear in mind is that self-care doesn’t require setting aside hours for meditation, or for exercise. Often, a few minutes here and there can be enough to claw back a little bit of focus, and keep distraction at bay. You might meditate for a few minutes between half-hour work sessions, for example, as recommended by the Pomodoro technique.

Healthy Snacking

If you aren’t eating the right nutritious foods and drinking plenty of fluids, then you might find that your state of mind begins to suffer. After all, the cells that make up your muscles, bones, and nerves depend on a supply of the right raw materials. This might mean snacking on fruits, nuts, and protein bars, packed with healthy fats and (of course) proteins.

The NHS recommends that we drink between six and eight glasses of water per day. If this seems like a considerable amount, then you might think about setting aside a refillable bottle that you can sip from at your desk.

Of course, it doesn’t mean you only have to drink pure water. Alternatives such as sparkling tea can keep things interesting. Be sure to limit your intake of sugar-rich drinks, as these can be disastrous for your health if you’re consuming them in large quantities.

Portable Self-Care Tools

Sometimes, self-care can be facilitated with a few choice toys and tools. This might mean a massage gun, a stress-relief ball, or even a pen and paper with which you can jot down ideas, sketch out drawings, or just aimlessly doodle. Your phone can also be a vital asset, especially if you install the right wellness-focused apps, and make use of screen-time limits and black-and-white mode at night.

Prioritise Sleep with Simple Habits

If you aren’t getting enough sleep, then your waking life will be disrupted. Make sure that you go to sleep and wake up at the same times every day and night, and that you avoid bright blue lights just before you settle down. Avoid resorting to alcohol and drugs to get to sleep – you might find that the quality of your sleep suffers considerably, leaving you feeling worse than if you hadn’t gotten any sleep at all.
