How to improve your sleep routine

Good sleep isn’t just about clocking in hours – it’s about quality rest that rejuvenates both your body and mind.

However, with excessive screentime and the stresses of everyday life, your sleep routine may need some attention to help you achieve a restful night you can look forward to. Small adjustments to your habits and environment can go a long way in improving your sleep quality, making each night’s rest more refreshing and also helping with your physical and mental well-being

Comfort is key

If you’re not getting a good night’s rest, it might be time to evaluate your bed and the comfort it offers. It is important to make sure that your mattress is providing the right support for your body type, as an uncomfortable mattress can disrupt your sleep cycle. Sometimes, upgrading it or adding a topper can provide that extra layer of comfort you need. You don’t have to invest in an entirely new bed, but if you feel your current setup isn’t giving you the rest you need, consider a change.

Also, think about the size of your bed. If you’ve been sleeping in a smaller single or double bed, upgrading to a spacious king-size bed might be the solution. With more room to stretch out, you’ll find it easier to sleep soundly throughout the night.

Create a nighttime routine ritual

Your body thrives on routine. If you’re struggling to fall asleep, it could be because your brain doesn’t know how to transition from the day’s activities to a peaceful, restful state. Establishing a calming nighttime ritual within your routine can train your mind and body to know that it’s time to wind down.

Dimming the lights in the room can help create a calming atmosphere. Bright lights can trick your brain into thinking it’s still daytime, disrupting your sleep cycle. Instead, choose soft, warm lighting – the kind that helps you feel relaxed and comfortable in a space. Then, choose between a few calming activities to help you relax. These might include reading a book or stretching. Activities like these are not only just for promoting relaxation, but they also serve as a reminder that it’s time for rest. It doesn’t matter how long the ritual lasts, as long as it helps signal the shift to bedtime.

Stick to a consistent time schedule

Consistency is a non-negotiable when it comes to sleeping well at night. If you go to bed at different times each night, your body struggles to establish a pattern, making it harder for you to fall asleep and wake up feeling fully rested. You can train your body to naturally anticipate sleep and wakefulness through sticking to a consistent bedtime routine and wake-up time.

Try and make a habit of keeping your sleep schedule the same and on weekends if possible. While it may be tempting to stay up later on a Friday night, doing so can disrupt your body’s internal clock and leave you feeling groggy on Monday. By going to bed and waking up at the same time each day, it’ll be easier to fall asleep at night and wake up feeling energized in the morning. Consistency will also help you feel more alert throughout the day.

Limit screen time

As much as we don’t want to hear it, looking at screens before bed can impact your sleep. The blue light from phones, tablets and computers suppresses your body’s production of melatonin. This hormone helps you fall asleep, so it serves a critical function in the body. To avoid this from happening often, try to cut down on screen time in the hour before you decide to go to sleep. That might mean setting some rules for when to stop using your phone or watching TV. You can even set up reminders on your apps to let you know when it’s time to turn everything off. Instead of choosing to scroll through your phone at night, consider doing something relaxing, like reading a physical book. Your body will thank you for cutting down on blue light, and you’ll notice better sleep as a result.
