Turning Daily Care Into a Ritual You Look Forward To

Establishing a new habit is tricky, as our brains are wired to crave routine. However, if you want to improve your lifestyle and incorporate exercise or wellness actions, you have some work to do.

Learn how consistent habits are set and how to ritualize your self-care routine for optimal results. When you create a ritual, maintaining it is easy and can be one of your favorite parts of the day.

1. Set an Intention and Mean It

Before you completely transform your routine, you have to understand your goal. Just like any initiative, having a clear goal is essential in creating a plan and knowing if you’ve been successful. Clarify what your new routine helps you achieve and why achieving it is important to you.

For many women, feeling good and healthy is desirable, but maybe too broad a target. Women experiencing perimenopause or menopause symptoms might pinpoint more enjoyable intimacy or greater vaginal comfort as goals. With either of these goals on the horizon, maintaining a routine to address vaginal dryness may be more sustainable.

Consider the range of goals you have that can support your routine and self-care tasks. Better sleep, improved mood, greater creativity, and higher energy are all possible through improved self-care. Conduct a life audit to pinpoint what’s most important to you and how your routine can support your goals.

2. Stimulate the Senses

Your olfactory senses are innately tied to memories, both positive and otherwise. However, when you layer sensory experiences with tasks, you get the benefit of improved memory. By associating a scent with an experience, you lock in the task with the scent.

For example, a lavender-scented lotion can signal that sleep is on the horizon. Just like a brewing pot of coffee aligns with your morning routine, so too can you facilitate similar triggers. Scents are not the only sensory experience you can stimulate – temperature, texture, and sounds are all fair game.

Music can be motivating, comforting, and restorative, so incorporate it where it’s appropriate and supportive of your routine. For example, curate a playlist that keeps your walking cadence in heart-pumping mode. Your body will naturally match the tempo and keep your heart rate elevated for greater cardiovascular and metabolic benefit.

3. Make It Lovely

There’s no denying that when something looks good, it’s more desirable. That’s why high-end restaurants can get away with sparsely plated meals and a high price tag. A less beautiful meal may be just as delicious, if not more, but presentation matters.

Display skin care essentials on a beautiful tray, showcasing their attractive packaging and keeping them in sight. Object permanence is a real thing, so when you keep ritual-related items in view, they’re easier to remember.

If you want to make journaling a habit, source a beautiful journal and fresh writing utensils. Reserve these items only for journaling, making the experience novel and special. Keep these items near your bed, desk, or wherever you intend to write so they’re always within reach.

4. Keep It Simple

Creating lofty goals is all too easy, but doing so can cause major disappointment and trash your motivation. Edit your goals ruthlessly, reducing them to no more than three at a time. Craft rituals with the same editorial eye, eliminating complexity throughout.

Use what you have on hand as you try out your routine. This strategy is not only economical, but it also reduces the friction between you and getting started. Simple changes, like dimming the lights, playing soothing music, and running a bath, all require action, not stuff.

Assess your potential ritual routine with realistic timing before you jump in. Practice your ritual with awareness of the clock, to ensure that you are maintaining simplicity and aren’t hindering other goals.

5. Make Care Tasks Multi-Purpose

Establish rituals during moments where you’re already present. Your daily routine places you in areas of opportunity for supportive rituals. Upgrade your morning routine with a five-minute stretch session to increase mobility and improve blood flow.

During lunch, truly break away and go on a brisk walk to reduce blue light exposure and reset your creativity. Meet a friend for your walk, and now you’ve layered social connections with your lunch break and exercise. By including others in your routine, you also facilitate accountability.

Should you want to skip your midday walk, that also means you’re canceling on a friend. You might find that the act of canceling is so polarizing that you can’t help but show up. Soon, canceling won’t be on your radar because your routine is set and the benefits are too great to miss.

Romanticize Your Life Through Your Daily Rituals

Make like your favorite fairytale and carefully examine and appreciate each moment of your life. Notice the sounds, sights, and scents of your world and consider them carefully. Doing so can support your overall well-being and newfound rituals.

Slow down and participate fully in your life, and adopt single-tasking to maintain focus on what’s in front of you. Appreciate the beauty in your life, even through the mundane. When you do, your rituals are easy to maintain and successfully support your life and well-being.
