Back then, Keilor was a busy stopover for gold prospectors heading to the Victorian goldfields, and Taylor’s home became a place of rest for travelers chasing fortune. What started as a quiet farmhouse soon became part of a much bigger story.

By 1859, Taylor had grander ambitions. Drawing inspiration from the castles of his homeland, he transformed his home into an impressive Scottish Baronial estate. He added a second story, a chapel, a billiard room, and bluestone outbuildings, including a dairy and butcher shop. With its turrets, steep gables, and intricate stonework, Overnewton Castle stood out as a little slice of Scotland in the Australian countryside.

A Legacy That Lives On

For more than a century, the Taylor family lived within the castle’s 35 rooms, their history woven into the very fabric of the estate. Stained-glass windows from 1859 still bear their initials, and above the master bedroom, their family crest remains, with the motto Semper Fidelis—“Always Faithful.”

After William and Helen Taylor passed in 1903, the castle stayed in family hands until 1959, when it was sold and passed through several owners. In 1975, Dr. L.J. Norton, a passionate historian, took on the task of restoring it. Even after a fire in 1980, he remained committed to preserving its beauty and history.
