If you’re considering tape-in hair extensions, then this tutorial is for you! Tape-in extensions are a great way to add length and volume to your hair, and they can be relatively easy to install if you know what you’re doing. In this guide, we’ll walk you through everything you need to know about tape-in hair extensions, from choosing the right kind of extension to properly installing them. By the end, you’ll be an expert on tape-in extensions and ready to install them like a pro!

Choosing the Right Tape-In Extensions

There are many different types of tape-in hair extensions on the market, so it’s important to choose the right ones for your needs. Hair extension specialists at Spectrum One Hair recommend choosing premium quality tape extensions. First, you’ll need to decide on the length, thickness, and color of the extensions. You can usually find tape-in extensions in a variety of lengths, from 12 inches to 22 inches. As for thickness, most extensions are available in either standard or thick versions. And finally, you’ll need to choose a color that matches your natural hair color as closely as possible.

Once you’ve decided on the length, thickness, and color of your extensions, it’s time to choose the right type of extension. There are two main types of tape-in extensions: human hair and synthetic hair. Human hair tape-in extensions are made from 100% real human hair, so they look and feel completely natural. They can be styled just like your own hair and can be dyed to match any hair color. Because they’re made from real hair, they’re also the most expensive type of tape-in extension. Synthetic hair tape-in extensions are made from a blend of synthetic fibers. They’re less expensive than human hair extensions, but don’t look or feel as natural. They also can’t be styled or dyed like real hair, so you’ll need to choose a style and color that you’re happy with before you buy them.

Single or Double-Sided Tape-In Extensions?

Single-Sided Tape-In Extensions

Single-sided tape-in extensions are the most popular type of tape-in extension. They are applied by adhering the extension to one side of your natural hair, near the root. This method is quick and easy and does not require any special tools or equipment. The main advantage of single-sided tape-in extensions is that they are less visible than double-sided tape-in extensions. They are also more comfortable to wear and cause less damage to your natural hair.

Double-Sided Tape-In Extensions

Double-sided tape-in extensions are applied by adhering the extension to both sides of your natural hair, near the root. This method is more time-consuming than single-sided tape-in extensions but provides a more secure hold. Double-sided tape-in extensions are also less visible than single-sided tape-in extensions and are more comfortable to wear. However, they can cause more damage to your natural hair.

Installing Tape-In Extensions

Now that you’ve chosen the right type of tape-in extension, it’s time to install them! First, you’ll need to gather all the supplies you’ll need such as a tail comb,  a rat-tail comb, a small brush, a mirror, clear tape, hair clips (optional), and your extensions. Make sure you have everything you need before getting started and follow the steps below:

  1. Start by sectioning off the top half of your hair, using a rat-tail comb to create a clean part. Clip the top half of your hair out of the way.
  1. Next, take a small section of hair from the bottom half of your head, near your ears. This section should be no wider than the weft of your hair extensions.
  1. Using a tail comb, hold the section of hair taut and apply a thin layer of clear tape to the middle of the strand. Be sure not to put the tape too close to your scalp, or too close to the ends of your hair.
  1. Carefully peel the backing off of the tape, and press the weft of your hair extension onto the adhesive.
  1. Repeat steps 2-4 on the other side of your head. You should now have two taped-in extensions, one near each ear.
  1. Now it’s time to move on to the top half of your head! Start by taking a small section of hair from the top front of your head, just above your ears. This section should be no wider than the weft of your hair extensions.
  1. Using a tail comb, hold the section of hair taut and apply a thin layer of clear tape to the middle of the strand. Again, be sure not to put the tape too close to your scalp, or too close to the ends of your hair.
  1. Carefully peel the backing off of the tape, and press the weft of your hair extension onto the adhesive.
  1. Repeat steps 6-8 until you have as many taped-in extensions as possible. We recommend starting with four extensions – two on each side – for a natural look.
  1. To finish, brush your hair to blend the extensions with your natural hair, and style as desired. That’s it! You’re now a tape-in extension pro!

Taking Care of Tape-In Extensions

Now that you have your new extensions installed, taking care of them properly is important so they last as long as possible. First, avoid washing your hair for 48 hours after installing the extensions. This will give the tape time to set and bond with your natural hair.

After 48 hours, you can wash your hair as usual. Be sure to use a gentle shampoo and conditioner, and avoid using any products that contain alcohol or sulfates. These ingredients can strip the extensions of their moisture and cause them to become dry and brittle.

When drying your hair, be sure to use a low heat setting and avoid rubbing your hair vigorously with a towel. You should also avoid brushing your hair too harshly, as this can damage the extensions. Instead, use a wide-tooth comb or your fingers to gently detangle your hair.

With proper care, your tape-in extensions can last for 6 to 8 weeks. After that, they’ll need to be replaced.

Tape-in hair extensions are a great way to add length and volume to your hair. With proper care, they can last for several weeks. Follow the tips in this guide to ensure your extensions look their best and last as long as possible.
