Extensions provide a great way to add volume and length to your hair. However, they can be costly, so you need to take proper care of them to prolong their life and ensure  that they remain in excellent condition. Read on for five tips for taking care of your hair extensions.

1.   Wash the hair extensions correctly

Washing your hair extension keeps them in good condition. However, you need to adopt the proper cleaning procedure to prevent tangling or spending too much time brushing out knots. To wash your extensions, apply shampoo around the scalp area and scrub gently. Remember to wash the ends and then rinse thoroughly to remove shampoo residue. Avoid washing your extensions during a bath as it causes the hair bonds to tangle. Instead, clean them in the shower to allow water to flow down the hair. You should also keep from washing the extensions too often, as this causes the hair to become brittle and dry.

2.   Use the right shampoo and conditioner

Extensions do not receive natural oil or nutrients like your hair does, so you should invest in shampoos and conditioners to ensure that they remain moisturized and nourished. However, not all conditioners and shampoos available in the market are ideal for hair extensions. While some shampoos and conditioners will leave the additions shinier and in good condition, they may also limit the growth and health of your natural hair, so you should do your due diligence before choosing suitable products. Consider speaking to a hair extension technician from Lux Hair Lounge for recommendations on the best shampoo and conditioner.

3.   Avoid sleeping in them

Removing your extensions before going to bed is one of the easiest ways to maintain your hair additions and improve their lifespan. Be sure to remove your clip-in extensions from top to bottom during the removal process to reduce the risk of tangling. For sewn-in attachments, those that you cannot remove before getting to bed, consider sleeping in silk scarves or sleeping caps and putting the hair in a low ponytail to prevent tangling and frizzing.

4.   Minimize heat exposure

Excessive heat damages hair extensions, causing split ends. No amount of conditioning treatments can reverse the effects of hair extension damage, and you’d have to purchase new ones. Fortunately, there are various ways you can minimize heat exposure to reduce damage, including:

  • Keeping the temperatures as low as possible
  • Reducing the frequency of using heat on your hair
  • Investing in a heat protectant

5.   Brush hair extensions with care

Brushing hair extensions is one of the easiest and most crucial parts of aftercare and hair maintenance. Combing your extensions regularly prevents tangling and matting, which compromise your hair’s aesthetic appeal. Start from the ends and work your way up to reduce breakage and shedding. Be sure to use combs that will be gentle on your hair, such as wide-tooth combs or wig brushes.

Endnote

Taking care of your hair extensions does not have to be complicated. Familiarize yourself and implement the above tips to preserve your hair additions.
