San Miguel de Allende is the Most Fashionable Place to Visit in Mexico

When one thinks of Mexico, they don’t usually think of a classical, colonial city filled with art of all media. In fact, it’s becoming a bit of a problem that most people think solely of Cancun or Cabo.

They are only hurting themselves, as there is so much culture and class that can be found sprinkled throughout the country of Mexico. We believe that the most fashionable and artistic place to visit in Mexico is easily San Miguel de Allende. It’s where many people from across the globe go to retire and where many artists go to study and get their start, and it’s quite easy to see why.

Unlike most locations in Mexico, San Miguel de Allende has a construction permitting process that monitors their architectural appearance. Because of this, only certain palettes of colors are allowed in San Miguel de Allende- yellow, red, brown, and orange. So, the city is cohesive and chic. It’s the most colonial city in the state of Guanajuato, which is easily noticeable by the beautiful homes that look small on the outside yet are deceptively large on the inside due to the type of architecture used within. In fact, this city is the most expensive city in the state, and more that 20% of its population is made up of foreigners, so you will easily find a melting pot of all types of people.

In San Miguel de Allende, you will find lavish estates with deceiving exteriors, luxury hotels, and a gorgeous backdrop for your Instagram photos. Needless to say, it is the most fashionable place to visit in Mexico, in our humble opinion. If you haven’t been swayed yet, read on to hear more about why San Miguel de Allende is so fashionable.

The Environment

The environment of San Miguel de Allende is easily what makes it the most fashionable place to visit in Mexico. As mentioned, there is a variety of nationalities, people, and artists living in the city, so it already paints a pretty fashionable backdrop. The art school in the city is what brings people in, but the culture and beauty of this colonial place is what seduces people to stay. With a quiet environment with easy weather, a history in music and museums, and access to luxury hot springs, how could you not love the environment of San Miguel de Allende? Plus, it’s a trampoline (so to speak) for new artists to get their footing, so who doesn’t want to be nearby to witness the creative minds of the future blossom? And, you really have to appreciate the beauty of the chapel in the main city center, as well. The Parroquia de San Miguel Arcángel is a sight to behold and surely an inspiration to many artists and fashionistas, too.

The Activities

San Miguel de Allende is less vibrant and energetic than the city of Guanajuato, but that’s better for those looking to relax. The activities, however, really steal the show. San Miguel de Allende offers some of the best activities in the state with lux hot springs, horseback riding, rappelling, and other adventure activities, and, of course, hot air balloon rides! If you want to see the city up close, think about doing so on horseback with Coyote Canyon Adventures. If you want to get a nice walking tour and learn more about the city, talk to Transportes Turisticos de Guanajuato. Or, if you really want to step out of your comfort zone and see the city from above, talk to Turismo Alernative en Guanajuato (@gtoalernativo) about a hot air balloon ride! If you’re just looking to relax, be sure to visit the market full of local artisans to grab some unique, artistic, and beautiful pieces to bring home. It’s a market where you are sure to find that unique treasure for anyone you love.

While we stayed (and loved it, by the way) in a hotel with classic cultural luxury in the city of Guanajuato, Quinta Las Acacias Hotel, the lavish hotels in San Miguel de Allende offer more modern luxury.
