Spring/ Summer 2017 Hair Accessory Trends

Perhaps it is because of the looming threat of environmental disaster, but the spring/ summer 2017 hair accessory trends are all about reusing, repurposing, and recycling this year.

Many of us cannot afford the designs displayed during the Fashion Week, at least not immediately once they come out. However, we can certainly channel the styles and trends we saw this season, whether through DIY innovation, or clever purchasing ” and maybe wait to buy a real designer piece once it’s on sale the following season. As far the spring 2017 hair accessories go, it is pretty clear that at-home attempts are exactly what many of the designers had in mind.

A few designers, like Alessandro Michele for Gucci and Dolce & Gabbana had made it a point to feature almost every type of hair accessory possible on their runways ” for an effect that was rather grandiose, as you will shortly see.

#1. I’m With the (Head) Band

A few designers always pull out all the stops, when it comes to glamour, so it is no surprise that one of the spring/ summer 2017 hair accessory trends is bejeweled headbands.

My favorite example of the trend comes to us from the Mary Katrantzou collection, where delicate golden headbands were placed on the model’s heads. These headbands were totally appropriate for even the fanciest of events, but thanks to just a few arrows along the side they were pulled a bit towards modernity ” despite being homages to her Greek roots.

The headbands at Elie Saab were also extremely beautiful. They had double bands, and were studded with golden stars.

We also saw a few jeweled headbands, and even some tiaras on the Bottega Veneta, Gucci, and Dolce & Gabbana runways.

#2. Pining for Hairpins

Some designers showed us cleverly shaped hair clips and pins that, despite their small size, add a lot of sophistication and interest to one’s look. While on some runways, designers went all out, popping these trendy 2017 hair accessories all over the models’ heads, we believe that the best way to utilize these accessories is by choosing one or two, and placing them carefully on the side of the head, or right at the back. Hair pins are an excellent choice for those embracing the extreme side part hair trend.

At Fendi, the hair clips had a very playful touch, thanks to their small, square and round pointed shapes, and contrasting colors that were very bright. However, I think we would have liked this trend a little more if the pins had been used less liberally, and on more selection sections of the models’ hair.

At Paul Smith, the models’ hair was pinned back with gorgeous clips, in colors matching the yellows, grays, and greens featured in the collection, and that reminded us a bit of the star system, thanks to an opalescent pattern and round shapes.

#3. Bejeweled Hair Clips

There was also a touch of glamour in these spring/ summer 2017 hair accessories, thanks to a few designers using shiny, bejewelled hair clips. Most of the examples were classy, but at the Ashley Williams show the glam and fun were paired together, thanks to large bedazzled hair clips that said “GIRLS’ and “BOYS’.

At Marchesa, to go with ethereal gowns, two gem-encrusted clips were secured to each side of the models’ heads, helping keep their hair slicked back.

At Bottega Veneta, we saw a lot of longer hair clips, with, bejeweled small flower designs on them that helped secure sleek hair, and added a bit of shine.

#4. Floral Hair Accessories

When we think of spring, we immediately think of pleasant warm weather, beautiful blue skies, and flowery fields. Designers and hairstylists at multiple shows took note, and made flowers a key part of the spring 2017 hair accessory trends.

Taking this trend most literally were the hair stylists at the Rosie Assoulin show, who sprinkled dried flower petals through the models’ loosely tied back hair, for an effect that was free-spirited and wild, especially when paired with the petals glued to the models’ faces.

Big red flowers appeared at the side of the head at Dolce & Gabbana ” also pink flowers right on top of the head, over a cap-looking thing.

At Miu Miu the flowers we saw did not even pretend to be real. Large headpieces, covered in tiny plastic flowers in shades of white and yellow-gold adorned the models’ heads, and it looked truly avant-garde.

#5. Thinking Outside the Sewing Box with Unusual Materials

We saw some playful and unusual choices on the runways this season, where designers took things you wouldn’t normally see used as hair accessories, and elevated them, making them high fashion adornments.

Tibi really stands out, where the models’ clean and sleek ponytails were secured very firmly with white and black belts. The effect was unusual, but still extremely clean thanks to the crisp color of the belts.

At Rodarte, fabric scraps from the collection were recycled towards making gorgeous hair bows and bands that were clipped to help pull parts of the models’ hair back, and added a lot of texture to the beautiful styling.

At Haider Ackermann, the hairstylists used shredded scraps of white fabric to separate chunks of hair that had been gelled up in remarkable architectural spikes.

#6. Big Bold Bows

One of the more exuberant yet feminine spring/ summer 2017 hair accessory trends for this season is the elaborate use of big hair bows, especially when tied at the top of the head. The effect is reminiscent of a pastoral existence, and is an excellent choice for a more dramatic yet girlish look.

One of the most striking looks on the Gucci runway was a model with otherwise fairly severe styling, contrasted with a massive, bright pink silk ribbon sitting right in the center atop her forehead. At Dolce & Gabbana, we saw various types of large hair accessories, including big bows placed right on the top of the head, which added to the overall soft, old Italy feel of the collection.

A large, flower patterned bow sitting a little off center on the top of the heads of models at the Lela Rose runway fit right in with the soft makeup and feminine collection. We saw a similar look on the Carmen Marc Valvo runway, where the large off center beige bow was only wrapped around one section of the model’s hair, helping pull it off to the side.

#7. Pretty Ribbons

Often, a smaller, subtle touch has as much effect as a grand gesture. This was certainly the case with the gentle ribbons we saw used throughout various shows. There are many ways to utilize the ribbon-based spring 2017 hair accessory trends, whether by just tying them around the head like a headband, or simply using them to secure a ponytail. No matter what, you are guaranteed a lovely look.

At Erdem, a long piece of black ribbon was tied like a headband around the models’ heads, immediately making their disheveled hair appear more planned and stylish.
At Monique Lhuillier, we saw small black ribbons keeping the models’ hair tied back in haphazard ponytails. We saw a similar style, but with beige bows, at Jacquemus, along with straw hats.

#8. Bandanas and Headwraps

Sometimes a girl wants a dainty bow, but other times a fearless bandana and a buzz-off attitude are the way to go. These attitudes are perfect for the summer 2017 hair accessory trends, seeing as we are also approaching the festival season, with big outdoor concerts and a need to look cool and not too approachable.

At Baja East, they channeled a Rock and Roll style, with bandanas tightly wrapped around the models’ heads as if they were ’70s rock stars.

At Maison Margiela, one of the effects was a combination of ’70s rock and futurism. Some of the models’ looked like science fiction hippies, with bright latex pieces of fabric tied around their forehead.

On the Anya Hindmarch runway, the effect leaned even heavier towards sci-fi, with head wraps made of a thick, white fabric that stretched both across the models heads, but also around their throats.

At Armani, we saw full head wraps in colors matching the outfits, for an expensive 1920s meeting a bohemian style effect.

#9. Branded Scrunchies

On the Chanel runway, it was back to the ’80s. Sideway ponytails, with psychedelic baseball caps ” but what’s making it to our 2017 hair accessory trends list is actually the scrunchies. Hairstylists usually eschew scrunchies, opting instead to pull hair back with nearly invisible hair elastics, and then wrapping some hair around them to make sure they completely disappear.

Instead, at Chanel, the brightly colored scrunchies had the iconic CC logo attached to them, and even covered in jewels in some cases, making sure they really stand out.
