Scotch & Soda Debuts At New York Fashion Week With a Spring 2017 RTW Line
It is always refreshing and encouraging seeing new debuts during the fashion weeks. Scotch & Soda is one of those labels that entered the New York Fashion Week with a blaze, unveiling a spring 2017 ready-to-wear line that is all about flamboyant looks and boho-chic references we already adore.
A globetrotter and an art collector herself, Scotch & Soda’s creative director Marlou van Engelen is slowly taking over the fashion industry with her eclectic views on clothing, art and life in general. Determined and a glutton for punishment (she has been pursuing her career in the fashion industry since she was 15), Marlou van Engel’s office is a former church in Amsterdam, the city where she was born and from which she copiously draws inspirations for her whimsical clothing line.
For her Scotch & Soda spring 2017 RTW collection, she specifically wandered through the streets of Amsterdam, deeply exploring the colors, scents and history of the city. She then found herself hopelessly smitten by the Dutch art of the 16th century, in particular by that of Flemish clergyman, astrologer and cartographer Petrus Plancius. His geographic and astronomical maps were some of the most detailed of the 1500s, and he was even one of the founders of the Dutch East India Company.
Like Petrus Placius, Marlou van Engelen lost herself in the immensity of the sea and space, loading her Scotch & Soda spring/summer 2017 ready-to-wear line with astronomical and cartographical references.
When not embroidering her staples either with geographical or astronomical patterns, Marlou van Engelen focused on practical items for us to wear while travelling and exploring new places, such as functional hats, fancy foulards and even hybrid sneakers that combine the coziness of sporty shoes with the edginess of Oxfords.
As for the clothing pieces per se, the Scotch & Soda spring 2017 collection puts richly textured garments and structures in layered ensembles that got revamped by asymmetrical cuts, fringed embellishments and tactic cut-outs. Festival-ready waistcoats, cropped tops and maxi skirts complete most of the outfits, infusing the entire collection with a playful vibe and a refined romantic touch.
The line’s color palette was equally rich, with vibrant yellows, reds and blues being combined with the collection’s dominating shade ” green. Aside from geography and astronomy, the Scotch & Soda spring 2017 line is, in fact, strong on botany too, as a way of celebrating the naturalistic discoveries and travels the Dutch East India Company made throughout the centuries.
Such a botanic motif also helped the collection reinforce its festival-ready mood, offering us a new, more contemporary take on boho-chic fashion.
Metallic and sheer fabrics completed the collection with much needed fancy chic refinements, keeping the synergy between the astronomical and travelling themes strong.
