Desigual Spring/Summer 2017 Show Brought Snapchat Filters to Life at NYFW
Desigual‘s spring/summer 2017 showing for New York Fashion Week was a total throwback. The embroidered denim, the hair, and the shoes and bags all came together to create this epic celebration of ’80s/’90s fashion. Many designers skip right past this fashion era and move on to the ’70s and beyond, especially in recent seasons, so it’s great to see a show that takes pause over that time frame.
To match the joyful embellishments of the clothes, the mood of the runway was particularly bouncy and upbeat. Models took moments for happy expressions, bringing back that nostalgic, childhood theme that only amplified the element of fun.
Last NYFW, the brand focused on multiculturalism; this season they might as well have done the same, because ’90s fashion is a culture of its own! And in the show, it wasn’t just hints here and there; the theme was overpowering in the best way possible.
Designers of the Spanish label did not shy away from reminiscing in butterfly and flower appliques on the denim jeans, shorts, skirts, and more, nor did they shy away from reintroducing trends of the past, like the frequent fanny packs (which also bore the appliques).
The collection even included two youthful bikinis, as well as a number of pieces that could work just as well on the street as they could as beach cover-ups. So the collection also has a bit of variability that will help bolster sales.
The makeup was kept to the bare minimum, with only four different models walking as exceptions. One model sported tribal-esque face paint, while another was adorned with a Snapchat-worthy puppy nose; the other two were adorned with a similarly fun makeup style.
Crocheted dresses and flower crowns made the girly Desigual spring 2017 collection even more feminine, and also brought in aspects of modern bohemian style. So while many of the pieces were literal recreations of styles and looks from the ’90s, Desigual showed how the looks could be reinterpreted as modern fashion.
But the most important thing is that the nostalgia of the days of fun and easygoing fashion can still bring smiles to so many people’s faces. While the ’90s may not have been the most fashion-forward era in fashion history, it can always be looked back at for happiness (even if that includes making fun of “what we used to wear back in the day”).
By pulling apart the separates, it becomes a lot easier to see how the collection works in relation to modern fashion. The prints make the ensembles especially youthful, so the overall line isn’t intended for a mature client. But some of the pieces might be, especially as they could be paired with non-clashing prints.
Once you begin to dissect the presented outfits, you can see the beauty in the ability to mix and match the garments with other pieces in the Desigual spring 2017 collection or with other pieces already in your closet for the season.
