Charlotte Olympia Teams up with Barbie
Barbie is busier than ever before, and so is Charlotte Olympia‘s creative director Charlotte Dellal. The one-of-a-kind duo has just teamed up to create a unique Charlotte Olympia Barbie doll, now exclusively available at Net-a-Porter and charlotteolympia.com for $125.
After spending a few weeks hanging out with her new BFF Chiara Ferragni, Barbie decided it was about time to ask iconic Charlotte Olympia for a collaboration, as she knew the British designer’s expertise with pop culture and vintage-inspired motifs is always a go-to whether it comes to bags, shoes or (Barbie) dolls.
Unsurprisingly, Charlotte Olympia’s Barbie doll is memorable indeed, with the actual doll being a ‘living’ proof that it is always possible to add uniqueness to something that is already iconic.
Following in the footsteps of her own works, Charlotte Dellal took Barbie’s first looks from the late Fifties and translated them to a more Twenty-first century-inspired kind of overall attitude, with Barbie’s features of the face being more similar to Dellal’s, and the accessory line being classically chic yet refined with a slightly contemporary touch.
“The face is very much like the original Barbie doll from 1959,’ explained Dellal in an interview with Vogue. “I wanted that retro look because the essence of my brand comes from my love of a bygone era. I love the Forties and Fifties and it was important for me to capture this aesthetic in the collaboration.’
Charlotte Olympia’s Barbie comes, in fact, with a dream array of gothic-chic accessories that includes everything from tote bags with spider web printed patterns to ballerina flats with cute kitten embroideries, not to mention Barbie’s brand new red carpet-approved stiletto shoes that are just too cute to be true.
“The likeness that we share is that we both love leopard print, Charlotte Olympia shoes, and red lipstick. And we probably go to the same hairdresser,’ she continued. “Charlotte Olympia and Barbie are both feminine, playful and love to accessorise.’
As for the dress Charlotte’s Barbie is wearing, Olympia Dellal decided to pay homage to one of her favorite fashion designers of all time, Giambattista Valli. Curve-hugging and tight-fitting, Barbie’s Giambattista Valli mini dress sinuously wraps her body, enhancing her curves and silhouette as if it was Charlotte Dellal’s.
“She has shorter legs, a flatter chest and is a curvier and exotic looking brunette of mixed heritage in a bikini,’ explained Dellal regarding Barbie’s new figure.
To further celebrate Barbie’s legacy and influence throughout the decades, Charlotte Olympia treated us to a seven-piece real-life capsule collection made of Barbie-pink pumps, geometric neon clutches and kitten-embroidered flats, the designs of which not only perfectly capture the iconic doll’s aesthetics, but will make us feel like human-sized Barbie dolls too.
Charlotte Olympia’s seven-piece Barbie doll capsule collection is already available for purchase at both Net-a-Porter.com and charlotteolympia.com, with price tags ranging from $325 to $1565.
