Raf Simons to Present Spring 2017 Collection at Pitti Uomo
Pitti Uomo is impending (coming right up, this June in Florence), and now there’s one more reason to get excited about it. Raf Simons has announced that his spring 2017 line will be shown at Pitti Uomo, and he will also be working on a special (and secret) project ” sounds mysterious enough? Pitti Uomo already has an exciting lineup of parties, exhibitions, and shows from designers like Fausto Puglisi, Gosha Rubchinskiy, and Visvim, so adding Raf Simons’ collection onto the itinerary only heightens the festivities.
“Florence holds a special place in my heart, as, over the years, I have regularly come back to show my work or to collaborate on ventures that closely mirror my thoughts about it,” Simons said, in an official release statement. “I am thrilled to be there again this season to present my S/S collection as well as a special project we are developing especially for Pitti.”
Simons isn’t just some stranger waltzing into Pitti Uomo’s radar; his past experiences with the event stretch back to 2003, when he co-curated an exhibition with Francesco Bonami, 2005 to show a collection marking his eponymous label’s 10th anniversary, and 2010 for the Jil Sander menswear runway show for spring 2011.
Simons’ move into this series will surely benefit both the designer and Pitti Uomo, as Simons will be getting back to his roots while Pitti will benefit greatly from hosting the talented designer’s runway. Although due to this transition, Paris Fashion Week Men’s will have a gaping timeslot; one that it may or may not be able to make up for in full. Despite the lowered prestige of Pitti Uomo, it will be great to see the designer in his original “natural habitat,” involving more unconventional methods of showing his lines, perhaps. In the early days of the designer and his label, he could be found showing his lines on overpasses and by incorporating videos of skateboarding teenagers. So perhaps we might see some of the old Simons come out. Who knows what inspirations may arise from this change of scenery?
But, the unknown outcome does not yet matter. What does matter is that Simons will be showing at Pitti Uomo and revoking his Paris Fashion Week slot, and that there will be a “special project” unveiled during the event. Pitti Uomo will be taking place between June 14 and June 17, so we will have to wait and see what is in store until then. If any semblance of the “old school” Simons comes out in this project, it will truly be a sight to behold, so make sure you stay tuned and up to date on any surfacing announcements.
