Update: Check out the new Spring/ Summer 2017 Makeup Trends!

Since 2016 is all about individuality and a unique character, as well as blending in the androgynous look to some effect, that is more or less what we expected out of the fall 2016 beauty trends as well. Which is your favorite look to emulate this fall?

#1: The Truly Red Lips

Okay, this is a classic. It is also one of the top fall 2016 makeup trends, having dominated for the spring and doing no less for the fall and winter seasons. It is lovely beyond belief, with brighter and darker shades taking to the stage, but always staying nice and cherry. It appears that red lipstick is here to stay so you can definitely invest in a few tubes of awesome color.

We see the bright red lips dominate on whiter skinned models actually, but that does not mean that your ethnic background should prevent you from taking on this trend. Proenza Schouler ensures it is just about the only color on the visage, which makes for a striking look, something Cushnie et Ochs is also a major fan of. The red lips are definitely a good enough statement on their own.

Thomas Wylde, however, believes in multiple contrasts, bringing in the red lips with the dark hair and thick brows, accentuating the lashes with a good amount of mascara and eyeliner as well. It was all about the ’80s style drama at Saint Laurent with the bright red lips paired with the really smokey eyes, hair slicked back to bring the visage more into focus.

#2: The Gothic Lips

Take a trip to the dark side this fall with lips that tell a story that belongs to underground. It can be as dark as black or merely a perfect plum, it can be paired with no other colors to the face or have incredibly nightmarish appeals. It can look pretty or downright out of a horror story. It matters not really. The Goth is in when it comes to the fall/ winter 2016-2017 makeup trends and you can wear it as softly or as fanatically as you wish.

Marc Jacobs went for truly Gothic, all black lips and strange liners with brows bleached out, while Rodarte and Nicholas K were quite content with bringing in the pretty, keeping brows thinner but natural and just plain focusing on the purple hued lips. The Gothic lips are simply divine and definitely a top trend contender, with Gigi Hadid bringing in the sexy while stomping down the Fenty x Puma runway by Rihanna and sporting the matte-black pout. The best, though, we would say are the rouge-noir lips that some of the other designer houses brought forth.

#3: Pastel and Bright Pink Lips

You know those soft, pretty and pink pouts little children have? The lips of innocence really that have not been affected by the colorings of life as a whole. This is in style to keep to the barely there appeals, with youthful stains to the pouts coming out on stage with feathered edges and coquettish effects ready to seduce one through inspiring the natural inclination to go for the ladies that are left untouched… the virgins, per se.

Tanya Taylor, 3.1 Phillip Lim and Banana Republic are only a few labels that have utilized one of the prettiest fall 2016 makeup trends in terms of lipstick to really bring out the youthfulness in their models. Gorgeous baby lips appear at Chanel while paired with some graphic eye shadow in order to almost upset the balance of the features and redirect the gaze constantly. A sugary baby pink color on the Miu Miu lips ensures the eyes focus more on the brows on these ladies that are all well-groomed yet nice and thick.

#4: No Color Added Lips

Sometimes there is nothing added, sometimes, it is just a touch of lip gloss. No matter what, this trend keeps things as natural as they come when it comes to the lips and there is nothing lovelier than that. You see a fresh face with the clear lips at Valentino, a slightly chapped loop to the pout at Balmain, and pale pink rose petal lips at the evanescent Elie Saab Fashion Week show.

#5: The Copper Penny Lids

When it comes to the fall/ winter 2016-2017 eye makeup trends, one color sticks out most from the runways, from New York to Milan, London to Paris: the penny copper hue. It clearly appears all over and lends just a little bit of shading without overdoing it, keeping things mostly natural while making it clear that you have makeup on. It is a beautiful trend that is best loved for its versatility. You can wear it no matter what your plans for the day and then the evening are. Alexander Wang, Noon by Noor and Leanne Marshall are only a few of the designers who have embraced this lovely look.

#6: The Rainbow Colored Eyes

Whether as a liner or shadow to the lid, there is a whole lot of technicolor you can invest in for the fall/ winter 2016-2017 makeup looks. Though you make thing of the colorful lids as something for the holidays or spring/summer seasons, in reality it gives some much needed life to the ensembles you wear out in the chillier days. This fall you should have no qualms about grabbing some bold brights, pretty pastels or some gorgeous metallic hues. After all, we did mention copper is in as well.

However, the best is probably that Mara Hoffman teal on the lids, accentuated with black eyeliner and a good amount of mascara added on. Noon by Noor and Milly also have some lovely creations to show off, the pastels of the latter also extending in a monotone sequence to over the brow bone.

Gorgeous aqua liners are used at Jeremy Scott to complete the Barbie look he brought to the runway, complete with pouting pink lips and star accents to the cheekbone. Colorful eyeliner is pretty cool in general though and appears in green, pink and purple at Fendi like the wings of a butterfly, or parrot-like with the yellow and aqua green at I’m Isola Marras.

#7: Graphic Black Eyes

There are the smokey looks that have their own category and then there are the thick liners with the winged ends and rather intriguing finishing, clean in general, without added smudges. And then there are those reveling in the smudged look that has made its way into the fall/ winter 2016-2017 makeup trends. No matter how you put on the obsidian, it was certainly one of the biggest statements on the runways by different designers, the polished look certainly speaking of class and dignified status.

Oscar da la Renta really loved the graphic black eyes, while it was all about the punkish lids at Public School on the fall 2016 Fashion Week shows. Truly graphic in black is what you see at Altuzarra, combined with the cool girl bob.

#8: The Smoking Appeal

Smokey eyes have long been the trend used for seduction. They show off the orbs within while appearing quite appealing in their sexy manner. The smokey eye is the main beauty look that has been utilized by near every woman in this world and then some. The fall 2016 makeup trends give this a bit of an update and add some more smoke and smudge to the bottom lash line.

There is nothing more beautiful than this really and designers such as Tadashi Shoji, Leanne Marshall and Diane Von Furstenberg know it well as they play up the lower lash smokiness for the upcoming chillier seasons. The smokey looks come in some interesting designs as well, with scaly features added to the full lid to brow smokey screen at Chanel.

Givenchy adds wings at the ends of the smokey look, while bleaching out the brows in order to redraw the facial sculpture. Chloe‘s creations include a whole lot of smoke on the lower lids, while things get really sultry at Dsquared2.

#9: The Statement Liners

While some designers added no liners or had them barely peek out from under the lashes, others went for the statement looks with bold colors, thicker smudges, fun shapes and sooty lower lashes. It became clear that one of the ways you can play with your cosmetics this fall is with the liner itself, drawing triangles at the end to extend the cat eye as per Pamella Roland, or adding secondary lines in aqua Jeremy Scott style.

You can also go full gothic and turn your eyeliner into your eyebrows as well with the double linings, paired perfectly with the black lipstick and pure white face as per Marc Jacobs. Elie Saab’s graphic liner use is definitely accounted for and there is nothing more enticing than the ladies sent out onto the catwalk in the fall 2016 beauty trends he’s adapted for his collection. Statement liners can get pretty graphic at Kenzo when it looks like the face has really become a drawing board.

#10: The Eyes Devoid of Makeup

Since we are still celebrating the more natural looks in terms of the fall/ winter 2016-2017 makeup trends, it makes sense for the no-makeup look to still stand strong in the midst of it all. Thick brows, clear lips, radiant skin and simply nothing on the lids, the lashes or brow-line. Gabriele Colangelo has models that match this description perfectly presenting its collection, Miu Miu is not afraid of sending out its girls without anything on the eyes, Louis Vuitton prefers to focus on the lips with the gothic berry look, and Reem Acra only adds on a pale pink shadow to accentuate the general lack of makeup on the face.

Prada pairs the clear eyes with a bright red lip and hair full of funky pins, while Balmain enjoys the gorgeous features of its models best. As for Marni, it is all about the thick natural brows and gothic lips with large eyes staring into your soul for the beauty aspect here.

#11: The Touch of Glitter

We saw glitter appearing everywhere. It was pretty fantastic actually, especially for those of us who have generally stayed clear of the style due to its teenager-ish appeal, but it seems as if the fall/ winter 2016-2017 makeup trends are all about the glitter really. We love it on our clothing and on our shoes and apparently on our faces and hair too.

Glitter turned up everywhere for the fall season, spicing things up rather nicely, with subtle flecks appearing on the lids at Tommy Hilfiger and Opening Ceremony, while it turned into twinkling finger waves come Marc Jacobs, the sparkle really making the models shine! Glitter was pretty fun when used as a brow liner on the Giambattista Valli show though, really offsetting the clear look of the face and arching up the brows in their natural state even more than average.

#12: The Radiant Face

Remember the wet look with the fall 2016 hairstyle trends? Now remember what that was generally paired with in 2015. The wet hair also had the fresh, almost wet, radiant face along in tow, looking pretty lovely. It is the shine of health and autumn is the best time to show off the shine that all that vitamin D from the summer sun you’ve harnessed.

Highlighters, shimmering toners, twinkling bases and golden eyeshadow are enough to bring out this particular beauty look with an especially lovely façade. We see it paired with gothic berry lips at Marni, a somehow caked on complexion at Balmain, and some really wet hair in a bun over a fresh face and untouched lips at Valentino.

#13: The Bleached Brows

You may not think of this as a viable trend, but it appears that redrawing the way the eyes appear is all the rage for fall 2016. This includes the smokey looks seen at Dsquared2 that are nothing short of delectably sexy, while Givenchy focuses on the Elven appeal by blanching out the brows and elongating the eyes with dark shadow. Kenzo bleaches out the brows in favor of adding some really graphic liner that changes the white dynamics of the look. Add in some silver glitter and you have Kenzo’s strange look.

#14: The Natural Brows

There is one trend that is seen all over and that is the natural brow look. You see it thicker and sometimes thinner, not really brushed and without any brow lining happening to fill out the empty spots. On the contrary, it appears cleanly unkempt, an interesting combination that merely requires you to pluck out a few strands to keep the shape normally arching.

Milly’s brows even look rather asymmetrical, while Noon by Noor enjoys the overall look as such. Tanya Taylor’s natural brows are definitely all the rage as well, while 3.1 Phillip Lim grooms them just enough. Jenny Packham and Mara Hoffman definitely understand the need for the natural as opposed to adding on the drawn on creations we have seen in the past.

The best part is that most have some form of grooming to the natural aspect of it, leaving them looking clean but not always full, and especially not thin. Thick and possibly well-groomed is pretty much how we are describing the natural brows these days, though Louis Vuitton has everything of the former trait and very little of the latter. Reem Acra falls in the same boat, along with Gabriele Colangelo and Miu Miu.

Fall/ Winter 2016-2017 Makeup, Beauty Trends: Natural, Bushy Eyebrows

#15: Focus on the Lashes

Although the fall/ winter 2016-2017 beauty trends mostly focus on natural looks, sometimes emphasizing certain features on your face can lead to more enticing results. It’s here that adding super-long and thick faux eyelashes can change a whole lot about your look, even if you decide to go out completely bare-faced. That can be simple black lashes as spotted at Anna Sui, sensual Bambi lashes brought in by Paul & Joe or ones accentuated with colored mascara that Emporio Armani capitalized on.

#16: The Real You

Have you ever felt that the beauty looks on models that appear on the Fashion Week stages are just too unrealistic for most of us people getting by with our day to day lives? It appears that many designers have also been asking this for themselves and their fans and decided that diversity is the best way to go and not in terms of racial, but in terms of the fall/ winter 2016-2017 makeup trends.

What some artists like designer Becca McCharen of Chromat have done is break the uncompromising barriers and bring in models who are transgender, who love blue lipstick, and mostly who have body shapes very much in tune with the average woman’s. Embracing the real you is the best beauty trend for fall 2016 and that means you can walk out there proud of who you are, no matter how tall or short, how thick or thin, how curvy or not so much. It is refreshing and it is real, which makes the best beauty trend exactly what you want it to be.
