Fall/ Winter 2016-2017 Nail Trends

When it comes to the nails, we are always looking for something, new, something different and something trendy. We do not normally consider the nails to be majorly affected by trends, but lately that has been changing drastically. Much like the rest of a beauty look, from the clothing to the shoes, the accessories and the makeup or hair, the nails are an essential part to completing a general outfit, jazzing it up or toning it down. Somehow, the nails seem to set the mood more often than not. We have seen some pretty cool designs for the spring season, so it is quite likely that the fall/ winter 2016-2017 nail trends will have something similar to present.

Fall/ Winter 2016-2017 Nail Trends

Update: Check out the new Spring/ Summer 2017 Nail Trends!

Those little digits can really change the atmosphere you are trying to portray. For example, the same suit takes on a sexier, more come-hither tone when the nails are a bright red, while the clear polish presents a woman set on work only. Glitter adds some spice to date night, while a fun design shows off some personality. Which of these fall/ winter 2016-2017 nail art and nail polish trends are most to your liking?

Before anything, we should mention the nail shapes that are most commonly seen on the runways. For the spring, it was a combination of rounded and squoval, adding length while keeping things less angular than many would prefer. On the contrary, oval and almond were the main shapes. For the fall/winter it appears we are not really seeing much of a change there. Short, rounded nails are actually more in line with the designer trends. So once again, the top shapes for the nails are:

• Rounded
• Oval
• Squoval or Squared Oval
• Long Almond

As for the overall lacquer and nail art trends for fall 2016, we are looking at:

#1: Darkest of Dark Polishes

Just like the beauty trends veering towards some really dark hues for the lips, the nails are also seeing a gothic overhaul, giving the manicure a more sinister effect. We are seeing black polish and darkest of greys, some really dark purples and others that hint at black. DKNY adds half circles at the top of the nail in a taupe coloring over the black in order to spice things up. Rodarte not only used gorgeous black lacquer but added a dark raisin outline to it to draw the eyes to those digits with ease.

Black nail polish is also often used as base, such as that seen on the Fenty X Puma by Rihanna runway, the frosty tips appearing to drip down from snowy mountaintops. As for the dark plum, you see matching nails and lips at Nicholas K. with the nightshade hues, the nails appearing to be a combination of eggplant, graphite and black dipped in black velvet.

Finally, the dark nails often have a certain gradient effect to them as well, with Tanya Taylor showing off brown to black creations with aplomb. And then, the addition of crystals and pearls on the nails with a matte black background are what make the Lulu Frost nails so very covetable for the fall and winter seasons of this year.

#2: Slivers of Silver

It was huge for spring and it certainly makes one of the best fall/ winter 2016-2017 nail trends. The silver additions throughout the collections are seen as an ode to the future, where apparently everything is expected to be gleaming metallic. Opening Ceremony played up the silver and the futuristic with icicle dripping nails, really giving it the winter do over.

All silver nails for fall 2016 are indeed quite the delight actually when considering what we see at Creatures of the Wind. The squoval short nails are beyond attractive with the chrome base, while the golden addition of a half moon at the cuticle is hard to ignore.

Darker silver in the look of chrome is found at Jill Stuart on exceedingly short nails, giving a touch of rebellion to a utilitarian design. At the end of the day though, the shining, metallic dark silver Roland nails on a squoval shape are possibly the best in this particular category, screaming wealth and dignity.

#3: Swarovski & Rhinestone Embellishments

Bright and shiny is nice and cool but it is the Swarovski crystals that add wealth and luxury to the nails. Area brings in simple manicures with gorgeous crystal additions, the designs not as important as the existence of those crystals itself. Libertine brings out the shine with the crystals embellishing some extremely funky looking nails, with eyes staring back at you. This is certainly a trend to try out and to show off, sprucing up even the drabbest of attire with ease.

#4: Glitter Manicure is Your Best Friend

Ahhh… the glitter is everywhere! For all of 2016, shimmers and glitter are all over the place, from the shoes to the handbags, the clothing and the fall 2016 nails. In spring it was a top trend and now it has become major for the fall as well.

We can enjoy the loveliest of glittering nails for fall 2016 in not so French style French manicures such as the golden tips seen at Carmen Marc Valvo, the teenager-friendly long starry negative space talons with the hot pink glitter polish, and the extremely long claws that appear in dark glitter and a silver base at 5:31 Jerome’s fall 2016 show.

Golden stars on the nails with negative space at Jenny Packham are a rather delightful sight, adding a bit of youthfulness to the overall look. VFiles adds in glitter on the cuticles, extending the look of the nails and giving the hands a very holiday-spirited effect.

#5: Add the ’90s Graphics to the Nails

Remember the funky styles for the nails from the ’90s? It was all about the crazy combinations of designs, with colors, drawings, cartoons, flags, and all kinds of interesting trends throughout. The ’90s were truly fun in the nail department, something that a few designers are trying to bring back with gusto. It was pretty cool how some were more minimalistic in the ’90s trends and some really took it all with ease.

DKNY’s half-moons at the top of the nails speak volumes. If you want quirky and darling, you should try the Rachel Antonoff red lip detail with black French tip ideal. It is certainly not an expected look for those digits. 3.1 Phillip Lim and Creatures of Comfort are only two other houses that feature some really lovely graphic nails reminiscent to the last decade of the 20th century.

#6: Add In Some Lines

The spring 2016 trends tended towards lines over rounded nails as well, so seeing the look continue into the fall and winter was to be expected. This is especially normal to find considering the obsession with lines on the clothing as well. They are simple but can have major effect.

Minimal often has maximum appeal and that is what is seen at Delpozo with the clear background and simple line down the center of the nail extending onto the cuticle. A single line of gold foil covers the matte taupe nails at Laquan Smith, creating a sophisticated, womanly appeal that speaks loud and clear about who is in charge.

Lines are added in negative space designs as well, with Veda boasting horizontal stripes in black over clear nails in the background. It is all about the boldness of the line you choose to use. Our favorite use of striped manicure actually resembles a motherboard on a computer, taking into the fashionable trends the latest focus on technology at Jonathan Simkhai.

#7: The Not So French French Manicure

Again a spring look, it was a modified French manicure that swept the runway as a top trend. While it certainly has not kept its place in the fall/ winter 2016-2017 nail trends hierarchy, the different style of French mani looks are certainly attractive and you can do so much with them. For example, at Cushnie et Ochs, the tip was split into a black and dark brock color, the combination is quite lovely and so very perfect for the winter holidays.

We see golden glitter edges at Carmen Marc Valvo, looking so very regal and matching beautifully with the eye makeup, as well as some rather intriguing dripping styles as seen at Novis, with greyish edges and lines down one side appearing as if dripping paint.

#8: Dual Tone Manicures

While the single color lacquer finishes on the nails is quite lovely unto itself, adding a second hue often only adds to the beauty of it all. That can have a futuristic metallic appeal such as at Creatures of the Wind, the chrome base topped with bronzed golden half moons over the cuticle, or the Fenty X Puma by Rihanna digits exploring the frozen tips look over a black base. The gradient manicure is pretty cool as well, using two different colors to get the Tanya Taylor nails.

#9: Expounding the Negative Spaces

The negative space look was huge in 2015, moved into spring of 2016 and has been appearing multiple times over in the fall season of this year, making one of our favorite fall/ winter 2016-2017 nail trends. It appears simply, not as often as we would like and looks amazingly good, but without the pomp and allure of the past seasons.

At Veda, it consists of a single stripe horizontally across the center of each nail appearing in black, while Delpozo gives it an interesting makeover with a single white line stretching down over the cuticle as well, the base of the nails kept clear. Negative space and glitter combine for a teenager’s spasm-worthy performance, all stars and hot pink over long, sharp talons at The Blonds. It might not be what you would wear to work normally, but it certainly livens up a holiday!

#10: Playing with Marble

Who does not love the marble look? Tie-dye has also been seen in 2016, making the marble nails one of the most expected fall/ winter 2016-2017 manicure trends. They look lovely with the more naturalized coloring, mysterious yet visual and oh so covetable. Christian Siriano really plays around with the boundaries of masculinity and femininity, bringing in the subtle but complex designs that reflect on a convoluted personality.

The nails at 3.1 Phillip Lim also have a similar structure, with more contrast and simpler hues, the gel polishes of Sally Henson really creating the right atmosphere. Beautiful marble is one of the best features of the Claudia Li ensembles as well, with the use of pinks and whites really combining for an exceedingly grand effect. Marble simply looks luxurious and marble nails can only add to the beauty of the hands.

#11: Simple Classic Nails

Do you prefer just a simple nail look that works well with work but still appears trending and stylish? Try the taupe on the short, rounded nails. Nothing extravagant, nothing long, nothing colorful. Just simple taupe. You can go for lighter browns as well as with Suno.

Gorgeous simple taupe manicure appears on the Narciso Rodriguez runway show as well, while Boss goes for nearly clear lacquer to suit the overall unhampered and unpretentious vision. It is a simple and classic pink at Derek Lam as well, with short nails and professional use of color, chic and adorable all at once. Jason Wu, on the other hand, goes for the natural colors to the nails and sticks to earthy feels, matte and lovely.

Simple can be colorful too, especially when you want to brighten up your monotonous looks, so look to DSquared2, Jeremy Scott and Sibling for some inspiration.

#12: Those REALLY Funky Nail Art Designs

Okay! We have gone through everything normal and now for some strange reason there are designers who have decided to add fur, strange eye cutouts and anything else you can think of to the fall 2016 nails. It may not be as common as you were wondering when you saw this category, but it is definitely worth a mention. After all, which Libertine fan won’t want a Swarovksi crystal embellished eye staring at them from their fingers?

We can technically tone it down a bit to 3D designs as well, as seen at Bibhu Mohapatra, with the tantalizing feminine looks being quite extraordinary works of art. We should hope Mohapatra’s nails last at least a month. But, if you truly want some crazy nails for fall/ winter 2016-2017, The Blonds has you covered fully‚Äö√Ñ√∂‚àö√묨‚àÇ complete with cookies stating eat or lick me on each digit. Delicious!
