MAC Releases a Makeup Line In Collaboration With Star Trek
MAC Cosmetics has just announced its latest endeavor: a new collection for 2016 inspired by Star Trek. Last September, Covergirl Cosmetics released a line based off of the Star Wars franchise, in response to the then-upcoming release of the latest installation to the series via J.J. Abrams. To stay competitive, there is no question as to why MAC decided to turn to sci-fi for inspiration, especially with the often-associated rivalry between fans of Star Wars and Star Trek.
Regardless of where the idea for it came from, the MAC Star Trek collection will bring in 25 pieces, inspired by the most prominent female figures: Commander Deanna Troi, Uhura, Seven of Nine, and Vina, an Orion slave girl. With a wide variety of products, glitter is the most glaring feature, being hosted within nail polishes, eyeshadows, and lip colors. There are only three pieces released in photographs, and with each one containing glitter it is safe to say it will be a constant trend through the rest of the products.
James Gager, senior vice president and group creative Director for MAC, released a statement when the collection was announced, really hyping up anyone who is interesting in MAC makeup, the Star Trek franchise, or both. “Spanning half a century, Star Trek and its loyal fans cross generations, influencing ideas and arsthetics of gender, race, and intregalactic potential. As the sci-fi saga continues, MAC and Star Trek’s latest cinema generation join forces in an exclusive makeup collaboration of cosmically charged hues. Coming September 2016!’
“Star Trek is an iconic pop culture phenomenon whose storylines pushed gender and racial boundaries. For its 50th anniversary, we celebrate each of Star Trek’s powerful women in a transcending, transformational makeup collection.”
Whenever anything is based from an aspect of pop culture, it brings up the concern of going overboard, or of not encompassing all of the great aspects. While we don’t know for sure how the entire collection will turn out in regard to this, from the statement alone it seems a safe bet that Gager and the team at MAC will take good care of the concept, especially since it is a “gift,” of sorts, for Star Trek’s monumental 50 year anniversary. We just hope when all is said and done, the products in the line will reflect everything needed for a totally flawless makeup look.
The pre-sale for the MAC x Star Trek collection has been announced for July 21, which just so happens to be the day before the latest addition to the Star Trek film series premieres in U.S. theaters. Coincidence? I think not. What could be better than wearing the latest MAC Star Trek products to the film’s release? Although for general sale, you’ll have to wait for September, as mentioned by Gager in his statement.
