Derek Lam Fall/Winter 2016-2017 RTW ” NYFW
Chic and totally polished, there was a certain grace and elegance to the Derek Lam fall/winter 2016-2017 ready-to-wear collection that was featured on the New York Fashion Week runway. It was positively a delight to witness the manner by which Lam had stitched together an incredible line-up of pieces that could be worn to meetings, on trips, to party and simply at work. There were clean lines and gentle sways to the skirts, some pretty awesome glittering mesh, lots of knee-high boots that we are going to be putting on our fall and winter 2016 trend report, and ruffled high necks that bring back the Victorian days with a whole lot of aplomb.
We really should bring the focus to the footwear for a bit. While we have been seeing flats for a while now, in different styles and creations, it appears that there are designers who are opting for something a little on the sexier side with stacked heels to boot, chunky at the back but with rather thin straps around the ankles instead. The footwear looks best with the below-the-knee hems, particularly paired with puff-shoulder shirts. The fall looks include long sleeves and very little skin shown, something we are rather glad about for we get cold!
One of the best features of this collection is the inclusion of lots and lots of pants, with flares and some boyish cuts, lower slung dark wash jeans and some interesting tunic over pants combinations. We see cropping at the ankles here and narrower fits, while we absolutely love the pantsuits among the collection.
That is not to say there are no skirts or dresses either. On the contrary, the whole line includes more than enough of those, with at least half of the 38-piece-long collection draped or sheathed around the body in different colors, from the white and black and greyish looks to the brighter fuchsia and navy blues.
We do see a few pieces fit for the red carpet as well, especially that black and white organza combination that looks like a wrapped up present with cascading skirts. The black velvet dresses are certainly superb and perfect for a party, but we absolutely love the simple looks in white with black thin belts the most.
Derek Lam has a gift for fashion really, pulling together some rather interesting beauties that we hope to see in stores soon. There is just something utterly perfect about his cuts and the manner by which he can stand out while still fitting in. We could almost say that Lam can get lost in the fashions of the day, but when you see his individually unique pieces, there is no way you could not identify them as his own. It is an interesting paradox, but one, which we revel in, for when it comes to a rather polished uptown girl look, Derek Lam has you covered with relative ease.
