Giorgio Armani Prive Spring/Summer 2016 Collection
On Tuesday, Giorgio Armani launched his Armani Privé Couture spring/summer 2016 collection in Paris. The line featured black-wig-clad models wearing looks that seem to mimic waves and water. While the wigs naturally allowed for a heightened level of cohesion, they were ultimately distracting, and didn’t work in favor of the designer and his couture creations. They hinted at the Hollywood glamour the brand is famous for, especially in terms of runway looks, but appeared cheap at certain moments in particular.
Regardless of the styling, the clothes, on the other hand, were true spectacles. With a palette almost entirely of almost unnameable shades of iridescent pale purple and mauve, the silhouettes ranged from that of waves to sea life, without anything coming across as gimmicky or too over-the-top. Of course, being a couture extravaganza, everything was created with a fantastical approach; from the silhouettes to the purple haze in the background, everything worked together to promote that.
Despite the fun and quirky nature of the silhouettes, Armani maintained a level of the classic Hollywood drama his brands have come to be known for: simple with a twist. From scalloped beading and floating frills to ball skirts, bustier dresses and timeless slips, there is no easy way to categorize the Armani Privé Couture spring 2016 collection, as it managed to have so many different elements while still staying cohesive. Armani has perfected the craft of using as many different aspects as he wants in a single collection without everything seeming too busy.
Even the separates in the collection displayed the same couture care, with a perfect balance between casual, professional, and formal. Pants with protruding waves floating down each side… The result was a bit too quirky for everyday wear, but make for the perfect couture statement piece for any socialite willing to draw a bit of extra attention.
Speaking of the show merited some interesting celebrity attraction, as Iggy Azalea was prominently in the front row. She made a special trip to Paris for this show in particular, which displays the level of dedication this artist has to Armani, as she took this time off from working on closing out her latest album, which will hit the market later in 2016. “I’ll see a few more shows tomorrow,’ said Azalea. “I thought I’d better stay another day because that would be insane otherwise.’
More insane than making a special flight to Paris to see a couture runway show? I wish I had that problem! Other guests who showed up to watch the catwalk were the likes of actresses Juliette Binoche, Isabelle Huppert, Olga Kurylenko, and Charlotte Rampling.
For Binoche, viewing the runway show was a much-needed break from an especially busy year, with over 100 performances in the iconic play “Antigone.’ Rampling, on the other hand, has a fresh slate ahead of her, coming off of her Oscar-nomination-worthy performance in “45 Years.’ Regardless of their reason, each exceptional celebrity earned the opportunity to sit back and enjoy the intriguing couture presentation by Armani.
