Met Ball 2016 Theme Revealed: Fashion In An Age of Technology
Today’s society shows a new merging between technology and fashion, such as with InStyle’s 3D backstage tour featuring Drew Barrymore. With these new additions, there is no real surprise that the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s upcoming Costume Institute exhibition will be technology themed, meaning the 2016 Met Ball on May 2 will share the same theme. New technologies have shaped the boundaries of fashion in significant ways, so viewers of the red carpet will be in for a total sensory experience, as we can look forward to intricate designs and extravagant gowns made possible only by today’s technology.
“Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology’ is the title for the exhibition. The line between haute couture and ready-to-wear fashions is becoming looser with the growing use of technology in the fashion industry. Designers are now incorporating machine-work in their haute couture lines, which isn’t a bad thing, but is something unique to today’s industry, and also has altered the way fashion can be viewed and worn. The Met has chosen a theme that perfectly sums up the past year in fashion, and it will definitely show in the fashion presented.
By no coincidence, the event is sponsored by Apple, which makes for the perfect figurehead, as the company is a frontrunner for electronics and is known for their innovation. The Met Ball 2016 show will host over 100 unique pieces ranging from couture to ready-to-wear, and will be a perfect merge between haute couture and machine-made garments. This further blurs the line between the two techniques, and it shows the beautiful possibilities for combining the two.
The art museum announced the hosts of the 2016 gala, and the range of cochairs could not have been more diverse. This is the perfect way to introduce the merging of technology and fashion, because there are people prevalent in both industries. Idris Elba, Jonathan Ive, Taylor Swift are this coming year’s cochairs, and honorary chairs include Nicolas Ghesqui‚Äö√†√∂¬¨√Üre, Karl Lagerfeld, and Miuccia Prada. This wide variety of people brings in the past two generations, and will serve to help people of all ages embrace the new incorporation of technological fashion.
Visitors will also be able to see some of the design processes take place through a series of workshops, where they can see the techniques being performed as they happen. Such processes will include 3D printing, laser cutting, and thermo shaping.
Technology is a hugely important aspect of today’s culture. With the majority of interactions and programs being available online, fashion was bound to be swept away. There could be no better theme for the coming Met Gala 2016, because no other theme would carry the same impact or meaning that technology has in the world today. We are all looking forward to the fashions seen on the red carpet and in the show, and can only wait with wonder of how the Met will show the marrying of technology and fashion.
