Jason Wu Spring/Summer 2016 Collection – New York Fashion Week
One of the most celebrated designers of the moment, Jason Wu presented his new classy, elegant collection titled “Glamour’ on the second day of New York Fashion Week spring 2016 and we are all in awe. Once again Jason Wu proved to be a real dressmaker, who knows how to create chic, practical and at the same time genuinely glamorous looks for women. Inspired by the glamorous 1950s, the photographs of John Rawlings, and mid century furniture, the Jason Wu spring/summer 2016 collection features textured garments, sheer tulles and chiffons, all transformed into real pieces of art.
The designer, who is famous for dressing the most influential women of the USA including Michelle Obama, chose a fairly muted color palette for his spring collection, including rust, forest green, camel, eternal black, white, pink, grey and metallic tones, making everything very reserved, minimalist, yet totally elegant. The collection was very polished and smart offering a wide range of daytime outfits and dazzling night looks. We saw amazing cropped knits with a hard-soft element paired with structured pencil skirts that can be perfect for any occasion, but also high-waist tailored shorts and pants. There were flowing lingerie-esque slip dresses, flirty ruffled skirts, classic V-neck black dresses, and for the die-hard girls ” a lovely black leather jacket with a matching leather skirt.
The key details of the show were the reserved ruffles and folds around the neckline, as well as the frayed fringes here and there giving the dramatic evening and classy day looks certain air of romanticism. Among all the subdued colors there happened to be a couple of eye-poppers too, like the bright floral-printed dress with layers of ruffles, which would definitely make a statement summer dress, and the bright coral one with exaggerated big ruffles.
Amidst all the flouncy ruffled dresses and sensual lace, Wu also showed a couple of edgy leather looks, including the zip-up black leather dress cut at the above the knee length and the emerald green snakeskin dress with flouncy sleeves and a layered skirt. The elegant black pantsuit matched with a lingerie-style black top and a pair of slip-on flats carried a certain casual air being a super versatile outfit for different occasions.
Jason Wu’s spring lineup featured a wide variety of flat and heeled sandals in different colors and textured leathers. In some looks, the designer successfully paired flats with dramatic evening dresses and vice versa. Minimalist and practical handbags were other accessories used with a few eyewear styles making an appearance as well.
However it is not only the dresses and shoes that we are interested in, our attention was stolen by the minimalist beauty look, the only statement maker being the velvet-y red lips. Apart from that, makeup artist Yadim said they used no foundation, no blush no mascara, and the faces were literally clean. As for the hair, the models rocked damp, finger-combed hair thrown back into chic looking buns. It is the Wu woman ” effortless, yet polished and sophisticated.
Overall the Jason Wu spring 2016 collection is all about the details women unveil only after wearing the masterfully crafted pieces. Once again Wu showed that he knows what women need and that he can successfully revive 1950s glamour.
