Fashion Trends That Are Bad for Your Health
Did you know along with what you eat and how much you exercise, what you smoke and what type of behaviour you own, you need to also be careful about the clothes you wear? There are risks in everything of course, and we know that over the years makeup products have been found to have toxic components, that the corsets of old caused all types of harm to the human body and starving yourself for the sake of being thin is one of the worst thing you can do. What we are sure you did not know is that the simplest of clothing items that you simply love to don on during the day or night can cause irreparable damage to your limbs and innards, so much so that everyone from doctors to the Wall Street Journal are talking about it now. The worst part? You most definitely own at least a few of these garments! You may, technically speaking, be a fashion victim at this point and not know it at all, as you are sure to love to wear at least one of these fashion trends that are bad for your health!
From the high heels that leave your feet sore by the end of the night to waist cinching corsets that sculpt your body but refuse to let you breathe, we have most certainly been suffering in the name of fashion for ages now. Some years the fashion trends tend to relax, like this year, while others keep things as tight and not breathable as possible. It certainly is amazing that clothing allows us to express ourselves in a whole different manner, while also ensuring we can look different every single day by mixing and matching the layers. But which pieces and beauty trends are known to cause the most problems, being labelled legitimately dangerous for your health?
1. Skinny Jeans: While this may sound laughable to many, there have been many cases where women have been rushed to the hospital and treated for nerve compression because they opted to wear jeans that were way too tight. One woman was hospitalized for 4 days because she spent a few hours squatting around and helping her friend move. Muscle damage, swelling, cellulite and nerve blockage are only a few of the problems you can have by wearing the cigarette coupe. If you want to wear tight jeans, go for the jeggings. They have a whole lot more stretch to them.
2. Body Piercings: This may sound like a no brainer but there are many women who simply can’t understand why their piercings cause them trouble. About 20% of body piercings give rise to bacterial infections, while other issues can include medical procedure interference and allergies. Cellulitis and impetigo are common enough infections. Clean utensils will prevent most problems, but you are always taking a risk with a new body piercing.
3. Tattoos: They are pretty to look at, artistic in design and represent who you are. Like the clothing you wear, they will define you, showing off your character through a very different medium. While the parlours have definitely improved drastically over the years and the trend has become commonplace, there will always be complications that may arise, such as infections caused by a negative reaction to the ink. Instead you may like to try temporary flash tattoos that are so easy to apply and look really cool!
4. High Heeled Shoes: This is a fashion trend we have been hearing about forever. At least on the dangers of it. Yet, just in case you are hearing it for the first time, let us reiterate the health problems that arise, and they are fully body problems indeed. Foot arthritis, bunions, knee and back pain, trapped nerves, stress fractures, ingrown toenails, and more. Over time, it has also been noticed that wearing high heels can eventually begin bothering the spine. There are even some foot injuries that will require surgery to fix if you are not careful with how you wear those stilettos!
5. Flip Flops: Since we said high heels are bad for health, you switched to the flat flip flops? Bad decision! While certainly not a bad as high heels, flip flops offer no support, and that means that you are susceptible to having plantar fasciitis and even nerve problems. Since you have to clench your toes to keep the footwear on, you might end up having foot fatigue, sore calf muscles and an altered gait, which in turn may lead to ankle and hip problems later on.
6. Pointy-Toe Shoes: Okay, we have banned the high heels, the flip flops and now the pointy toes; we are sure you are ready to give up and say whatever happens, happens. There are still whole boatloads of styles you can turn to though! Just bear with us. As you can imagine, feet are not made to be shoved into a small triangular space, which automatically means problems with ingrown nails, bunions, corns, hammertoe and even numbness, something you can feel often enough when you shove feet into high heels with triangular toes. They may look stunning, but use them only for the photos. Excessive amount of time spend in these can be killer.
7. Corsets: We’ve always known these cause problems. While the corsets today might not be like those from a century past, they still have some terrible effects on the body, all in the name of a trim waist. Honestly, what is wrong with a bit of a belly and some love handles? They are cute! If you think that corsets will actually train your waist to stay trim and let the food slide down to plump up the backside and thighs instead, and are willing to take the risk of constipation, shortness of breath, lung infections, pushing the stomach into the diaphragm, bruising or cracking of the ribs, etc., then do keep doing it. The Kardashians seem to be fine‚Äö√Ñ√∂‚àö√ë¬¨‚àÇ for now.
8. Heavy Purses: As the handbag sizes get bigger, we women have a tendency to stuff in a whole lot more than necessary. Heavy bags can cause a significant amount of back and neck pain so it might be a prudent step to keep to the smaller versions and always make sure that they are no heavier than 10% of your bodily weight. You certainly do not want to be throwing off your back alignment or develop “poshitis’ ” strain injury in the tendons and muscles in the arms from carrying a bag around on the crook.
9. Tight Neckties: While this may not be the biggest risk you face, wearing your neck ties a little too tight can result in intracranial pressure, increased blood pressure in the eyes and breathing problems. Few women wear ties and even fewer tie it so tight, so this is not a fashion trend that we worry about much.
10. Accessories Containing Nickel: This may sound confusing, but quite a few things you wear contain the metal, and it is not only in jewellery. Belt buckles, watch backs, jeans rivets, you name it, it might have it. You might begin to develop a nickel allergy, even in adulthood, after being exposed to the metal for so long. Your best bet? Buy gold instead. You may have fewer pieces overall, but at least you know it is not a metal that can give you allergies, at least the purer versions.
11. Wearing Earrings: Not all earrings are a problem. Well, most of the time. Anything you wear on you runs the risk of catching somewhere, but if you catch your earring, you run the risk of splitting your lobes. It is a painful experience and normally you have to be careful around a child. Wearing heavy dangling versions, though, is a big problem, since that will weigh down your lobes over time, stretching them irreparably or splitting them when it gets to be too much. Plus, there is always the problem of giving yourself a royal headache by wearing them too much or too often. Infections from wearing another’s ear pieces without properly disinfecting are quite real, while costume jewellery is all sorts of wrong due to the potentially high levels of dangerous chemicals involved in their creation. The ecology center has reported large amounts of lead, cadmium, chromium, mercury ad arsenic, among other chemicals, to have been found in most items picked up from the typical teen stores: Claire’s, Forever 21, H&M, etc. Stick with gold, you are safe thus. 14k or 18k is your best bet.
12. Sexy Underwear: Whether you are a man or woman, wearing tight underwear causes major problems for your body. While men seem obvious enough why the discomfort would occur, with women it has been shown to lead to urinary tract or other infections that cause you too many problems. Stick with the breathable fabric and sex it up another way if you need to.
13. Tanning: The dangers of tanning are another topic beaten to death and yet tanning salons have only gained in popularity among the younger populations especially. Tanning booths are infinitely riskier than actual sun exposure as the beds emit 15 times more UV light than that received naturally. Teenagers are the biggest consumers here, with some starting from the tender age of 13. Skin cancer is a huge risk, particularly among the lighter skinned, with melanoma being an issue 59% of the time for those who first used the beds before the age of 35. You don’t need to burn to damage skin and that is a fact. Also, you do not need excessive sun exposure to get the Vitamin C your body needs. Stick to self-tanning if you want the glow, but make sure you are using at least SPF 30 along with it for protection.
