The Oscars of Fashion, the CFDA Awards took place last night honoring the biggest American talents. The Council of Fashion Designers of America opted for a new location this year, the Brooklyn Museum. Issa Rae hosted the celebrity-packed event that included everyone from Kendall Jenner and Kaia Gerber to Lupita Nyong’o and Cate Blanchett.
Speaking of the awards, pre-announced honourees included Diane von Furstenberg, who won the Swarovski Award for Positive Change; Carolina Herrera, who was presented with the Founder’s Award in honour of Eleanor Lambert; Narciso Rodriguez, who took home the Geoffrey Beene Lifetime Achievement Award; Donatella Versace, who was honored with the International Award; Naomi Campbell, who was recognized as the CFDA’s Fashion Icon; Edward Enninful, who received the Media Award; and Ralph Lauren who was presented with the CFDA’s first ever Members Salute Award.
Naomi Campbell delivered one of the most emotional speeches of the night:
“I was told many times that I couldn’t do certain things because of the color of my skin. I let it drive me. And of course I’m human, and I found it hard at times not to take it personally. But I stand here today as a proud woman of color, and I will continue to push for diversity and equality in this industry,” the supermodel told the audience.
The main part of the event included A-list presenters who handed the top prizes to the brightest talents in American fashion. The award of Womenswear Designer of The Year went in the hands of Raf Simons of Calvin Klein for the second year in a row. James Jebbia of Supreme was awarded for best menswear designer and he had some interesting thoughts on the topic:
“I’ve never considered Supreme to be a fashion company or myself to be a designer, but I appreciate the recognition for what we do,” he said.
According to the CFDA, in the accessory game, famous twins Mary-Kate and Ashley Olen of The Row won. The Council of Fashion Designers of America decided to present the Swarovski Award for Emerging Talent to Sander Lak of Sies Marjan.
It seems that in 2018, the CFDA is finally giving some credit to influencers. The Council included a new award this year – The Influencer Award. This prize went into the hands of no other than Kim Kardashian. Ten years ago, the reality star was considered as famous for being famous without any particular talent. But now the CFDA is recognizing her achievements in the industry with The Influencer award. Kim herself seemed surprised:
“I’m kind of shocked I’m winning a fashion award when I’m naked most of the time,” she joked during her acceptance speech. “But this is seriously such an honor, so thank you to the CFDA for this award,” she finished.
The Council of Fashion Designers of America announced that Naomi Campbell will receive the Fashion Icon Award this year. The long-legged gazelle is joining the club of names such as Rihanna, Pharrell Williams, Beyoncé, Kate Moss, David Bowie, Iman, Lady Gaga and more. The ceremony will take place at the Brooklyn Museum on June 4. For the first time ever, the event will have a female host. The talented actress/director Issa Rae will have the honors to lead the evening in front of the star-studded guest list.
“It is truly an honor to be recognized by the CFDA with this year’s Fashion Icon Award. Being from London, my personal style has always been tremendously influenced by both the dynamic, ever-changing nature of street culture and the music scene. I grew up in this industry and I’m forever grateful to the iconic American fashion designers who have supported me and celebrated me throughout my career.”- Campbell stated.
Words are not enough to explain all of Naomi’s accomplishments in the fashion industry. The term iconic barely does her justice. Campbell is the first black woman to pose on the covers of Time magazine and Vogue France. She has fronted so many other covers, that it’s hard to keep track. The supermodel was a close friend and muse to the late legendary designer Azzedine Alaïa. He was the one who helped her the most in her career and supported her throughout the years. Campbell was often the source of inspiration and walked most of his runway shows.
Naomi has established herself as an actress on the screens and also stared in a number of music videos. There isn’t a single person who doesn’t remember her impactful appearance in Michael Jackson’s “In The Closet” video. At the age of 47, the gorgeous Campbell still looks like she’s in her 20s. She uses every chance to show off that fierce, recognizable look on the catwalks even now. And we’re all here to feast our eyes every single time.
The CFDA also announced all the nominees in the different categories. In the women’s best designer category the nominee list includes Gabriella Hears, Marc Jacobs, Raf Simons, Virgil Abloh, Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen. Carolina Herrera will be presented with the Founder’s Award, which pays homage to Eleanor Lambert. Edward Enninful, on the other hand, will be honored with the Media Award celebrating Eugenia Sheppard. Dianne Von Furstenberg will be awarded the Swarovski Award for Positive Change.

For Donatella Versace 2017 was the year of paying respects to her late genius brother. First, she staged the most epic Spring 2018 show in Milan. The designer gathered the supers Naomi Campbell, Cindy Crawford, Helena Christensen, Carla Bruni and Claudia Schiffer for an iconic closure. It was officially the biggest runway show of MFW, which had all of the guests on their feet and applauding. Just recently, Versace released their Pre-Fall 2018 collection that also celebrates the work of Gianni. Now, just in time for holiday season, Donatella is bringing more excitement for everyone.
For the Spring 2018 campaign, the designer once again tapped the biggest modeling names in fashion. From the sneak peek, we could see that the ad material will feature several different generations of models. From the five OGs that walked the spectacular runway finale in September, only Naomi Campbell appears in the campaign. The supermodel will be accompanied by other veterans such as Natalia Vodianova, Christy Turlington, Gisele Bündchen, Raquel Zimmermann, and Irina Shayk. There is also a second generation of up-and-coming names that are here to follow and learn from the supermodels.
Kaia Gerber is flaunting a chic pale blue ensemble on the photos, with voluminous 90s hairstyle and show-stopping accessories. Among the other Insta-popular models you will see Gigi Hadid, Grace Elizabeth, Cara Taylor, Brigit Kos, Vittoria Ceretti and more.
“It has been amazing shooting this campaign surrounded by all of my friends and some of Gianni’s to whom this collection is a tribute. I felt so many different emotions at the same time, but they were all very positive. There was such a joyful energy in the air, it was like I went in a travel machine and went back to the nineties. It was like if Gianni was on set with us.”- Versace told WWD.
The campaign shows off the designs from the Spring 2018 collection. Shot by, Steven Meisel, you’ll notice heavy 90s vibes. Since Donatella’s creations pay homage to Gianni’s work, all of his recognizable prints once again came to life. His clothes were all about making a statement and standing out. And there is no better way to do that but with eye-catching designs that feature luxury fabrics, bold patterns, and vibrant colors.
The full campaign will make a debut on December 18. You can expect to see many photos and videos that will bring you back to the best years in fashion. The guess is that we will be hearing much more about Gianni and his phenomenal talent in the upcoming year too. In January, FX will premiere a short series titled “The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story”.

The whole fashion industry mourns the death of one of the greatest couturiers of all times. Azzedine Alaïa passed away at 77 in Paris. The Tunisian-born designer was a real visionary who went against all stereotypes in the fashion world. According to a spokesperson, the designer suffered a heart attack on Saturday. He was one of those people that lived life to the fullest.
Azzedine was born in Tunis in a family of modest farmers. The exact year of his birth is not confirmed yet since he often lied about his age. According to reports, the King of Cling was born in 1940. Even since his early age Alaïa knew what he wanted to be. He had an outstanding craftsmanship talent that decided the course of his career. The designer first started off as a sculptor, but soon realized that his place was in the fashion industry.
After several years of work in his country and after gaining clientele, Alaïa decided to move to Paris. He was so talented that he got a job in Dior but unfortunately had to leave because of his immigration papers. In the following years, he earned short-term jobs at Thierry Mugler and Guy Laroche. He scored big time when he met several rich people who helped Azzedine establish his own studio.
The designer launched his first RTW collection in 1980 and it was one of the most revolutionary lines in the world of fashion. His unique approach towards cutting, figures, craftsmanship got him high on the throne of haute couture. He would spend days and nights with no sleep until he finished a dress. Alaïa was very passionate about his work. He celebrated the female body like no one else. All of his designs were created to fit to perfection.
“When the collection is ready, it’s ready. Unless I have a length of fabric in my hand and a girl in front of me, I really can’t come up with a lot of ideas.”- was the designer’s motto.
This is officially the end of an era. Many people think that the last great craftsman in the world of fashion died with Azzedine. The Tunisian designer celebrated diversity since the beginning of his career. He always cast unique models and supported their career.
The King of Cling retired in 1992 with one last ground-breaking show. He didn’t follow any dates or schedules but presented a line whenever he felt it was ready. In July Azzedine presented an unexpected couture runway show. His greatest muse and best friend Naomi Campbell made a show-stopping appearance on the catwalk.
It’s been exactly 45 years since Pirelli first started blessing us with their amazing calendars. For the 2018 edition, the Milanese brand has another surprise. This time they recreated the “Alice in Wonderland” fairytale casting only black models, actors and activists to wear the costumes.
The stunning photoshoot was done by Tim Walker and was styled by Edward Enninful. Edward is the newly appointed editor of British Vogue, so this was a huge starting point for him. These two with the help of Shona Heath, who designed the set made a unique recreation of Lewis Carroll’s fairytale. The pictures are full of eye-catching costumes done in vivid colors.
Pirelli’s fourth-timer Naomi Campbell and Sean “P. Diddy” Combs lead the stunning array of beautiful faces that star in the calendar. The two portray the role of Royal Beheaders, while supermodel Slick Woods is The Madhatter.
The central role was given to the gorgeous Duckie Thot. Whoopi Goldberg and Thando Hopa teamed up as The Queen of Hearts and The Princess of Hearts. Thando is an albino South African model, activist, and a lawyer.
Among the other familiar faces featured in the calendar is Adwoa Aboah as Tweedledee, Lupita Nyong’o as The Dormouse, and Djimon Hounsou as The King of Hearts. Senegalese model Alpha Dia is The Five-Of-Hearts-Playing-Card Gardener, while his fellow model King Owusu is Two-Of-Hearts-Playing-Card Gardener.
“Pirelli doesn’t discriminate, it’s tyres! It’s Formula One, it can go anywhere it wants to go and it will be a positive message. Even though the [theme] of the calendar is Alice in Wonderland, the message is so big.The timing couldn’t have been better. This week has been an iconic and phenomenal week. The new Vogue launched at the start, and it’s ending with Pirelli. It’s an amazing time, it’s a new time, and I feel that it will remain. I’m so proud of Edward.”- said Naomi Campbell.
All of the stars celebrated the launch of the calendar on Friday evening. They arrived at the Manhattan Center to a psychedelic entrance that imitated the theme. Pirelli is slowly abandoning their concept of featuring models with conventional beauty that are accepted by everyone. In the last few years, they turned the attention to a more diverse cast that represents the reality.
With the rise of social media, it seems easier than ever to gain the title It girl. But the term It girl isn’t related to Instagram at all. Even after more than 30 years in the business, the fashion world still can’t get enough of the legendary Naomi Campbell.

In one of the most touching and amazing presentations this fashion month, Donatella Versace paid tribute to her talented brother. Even 20 years after his tragic death, Gianni Versace is still one of the biggest names in the fashion industry. This time, Donatella decided to celebrate his work and bring back to life his most iconic designs.
“I finally found the courage to really go to the archives and pay tribute to Gianni. In one show you can’t really touch on everything Gianni did. Gianni was joy, he was happiness, full of life; and these prints were a big part of his personality,”- Donatella explained before the show.
Donatella based the Spring 2018 collection on the most iconic moments from Gianni’s design history. She took the courage to peek at her brother’s archives and reinvent his biggest collections. Versace was mostly focused on the period from 1991 to 1995 when Gianni reached his career peak and presented out-of-this-world designs.
The upgraded pieces from Spring 2018 are based on ten influential collections by the late fashion giant: Icons, Warhol, My Friend Elton, Tresor de la Mer, Vogue, Animalia, Baroque, Metal Mesh, Butterflies and Native Americans. All Donatella did, was borrow the vibrant prints and made a new collection that is the dream of every modern lady.
The designs weren’t just replicas of Gianni’s work. On the contrary, Donatella only used the basics and gave a strong feminine touch to the figures. Gianni’s iconic prints were used from head to toes in most of the looks. You could still see the baroque leggings, the faces of Marilyn Monroe and James Dean on tight catsuits and a hint of soft pastels. Gianni did athleisure way before it was a thing, so that is why the collection featured elements of street style with delicate elegance and glamour.
And if you were wondering who would score the best runway moment during the Milan Fashion Week, wonder no more. Donatella surpassed every huge show opening and closing so far. The designer repeated history by gathering “The Supers” at one place and letting them close the show right next to her. In a dimmed lightning the curtains went up and the greatest models of all time showed up on the runway. Claudia Schiffer, Carla Bruni, Naomi Campbell, Cindy Crawford and Helena Christensen appeared in gold lame gowns and started walking while George Michael’s “Freedom” was playing. What an amazing way to honor the great memory of Gianni and to remind everyone how grandiose his impact is in today’s fashion.
