Highlights have been around forever in multiple forms for a good reason. It’s the effortless way to add life to your mane without committing to a single color. The latest hair trend that rose to fame on Instagram offers a new innovative way to give dimension to your hair. The shadow hair trend isn’t about adding lighter strands, but the exact opposite. The shadow toning technique is used to add depth to your color in the most natural-looking way.
We are blessed with so many hair coloring techniques, from the salon’s favorite balayage to the fairly new ones like fallayage and foilyage. It’s time for you to meet the latest trending highlighting technique on social media – strandlights.
If you are into the infamous balayage, chances are that you will fall in love with this technique too! Balayage no longer carries the title of the most natural-looking technique for highlighting your hair. Strandlighting is even more intricate than the good old balayage and gives the most beautiful subtle highlights to your mane. The strandlighting is a freehand coloring technique that involves separating and dying just a few individual strands at a time. The strands are separated with foils just like when highlighting your hair with the balayage technique.
The main difference is the amount of hair that goes into every foil. For strandlighting, hair colorists use very fine pieces of hair. According to experts, for the best results, your hair colorist needs to take strands directly from around the hairline. This way you’ll get that summery sun-kissed effect. However, you can also get it done from the mid-lengths to the ends, it will look just as pretty. Texas colorist Liz Haven took it to Instagram to explain this new hair color trend:
“This strandlighting technique details any color story to sun-kissed perfection. The density along with the placement guarantees a perfect low-maintenance brightness every time. I promise you, if applied correctly, there is no horizontal line of demarcation when this grows out. Easily encouraging anywhere from 3-4 months in-between applications.”

There are a few advantages of the strandlighting that might make you reconsider your go-to balayage. First, you’ll get a fresh, brightened look with less damage on a larger amount of your hair. If you can get away without bleaching the damage of your hair will be minimal. Second, strandlights look much more natural than the balayage and regular highlights which in some cases can look chunky. You will have no issues when the color starts to grow out because the strandlights blend seamlessly with the rest of your hair leaving an extremely natural overall effect.
The strandlighting can be done in a variety of colors, from the usual blonde to trending rose gold, red, copper and more depending on your hair color and preferences. No matter what color you choose the strandlighting technique will transform your mane from basic to Pinterest-worthy.
Leave it to Instagram to inspire your next dramatic dye job. In case you are looking for fun dye jobs to try for the sunny season, we have something that you’d for sure double tap. The prism roots hair is one of the newest rainbow-inspired hair trends for all the gals who don’t want to go all in. A head full of multicolored rainbow-hued strands might seem overwhelming to many. This is where the prism roots step in to brighten up your life without being too loud. There are countless of summer-ready hair trends on Instagram, but we couldn’t overlook how gorgeous is the prism dye job.
The St. Louis-based hairstylist Kristina Cheeseman is responsible for this new trend. Judging by her Instagram she knows countless of techniques for dyeing hair in the colors of the rainbow. The prism roots is a creation that came naturally after her client gave her freedom to do whatever she wants with her hair. The hairstylist started off by bleaching her hair to a platinum blonde. Next, she had to focus on the roots. Although she didn’t color all of her client’s hair, the prism roots dye job was still not easy to achieve. Kristina made a horseshoe-shaped parting on the top and colored it in silver. According to Cheeseman, this was the “veil” of the rainbow. Next, she placed neon colors horizontally on the bottom sections of her client’s hair. The process took “only” 3 hours just because her client’s hair was previously pre-lightened on her ends. According to Cheeseman, if she had to do this as well, the process would have lasted twice as long.
The neon-hued rainbow roots hair is sure not an effortless dye job. Anyway, one of the biggest advantages of this vibrant trend is that it looks very different on different hairstyles. With only one dye job you can trick everyone around you that you have a fresh new color every time you style your hair in a different way. Not to mention that your Instagram account will get an instant upgrade from the moment you get prism roots.
Kristina Cheeseman has done quite a few prism dye jobs. Judging by her Instagram, you can fully customize the way you want your hair to look. This is perfect for those who can’t decide which hair color to get. This dye job includes multiple vivid shades and elevates all your hairstyles to another level.

If you have chosen the path of being a not-so-natural blonde, you are probably pretty aware of the work and funds required to keeping those blonde locks healthy. I have been blonde for around 17 years now, and through LOTS of trial and error, I have finally found a routine that keeps my strands healthy. They say the best way to learn, is from experience, and being the delightful (insert sarcasm) combination of stubborn and rebellious, I have made plenty of hair related uh-ohs. Already having brittle and fine hair, I have made the mistake(s) of way over processing my hair to almost platinum, and then went through the habit of adding glued extensions, then moving on to bonded extensions. In the recent years, I finally slowed down with the processing, and with the help of hair color specialists (that actually know what they are doing) I went with more natural looking blonde shades, I only use clip in extensions as needed, I take amazing hair supplements, and I use the best treatments and products I can find. Through all of my trial and error, for the first time in a long time I finally have healthy hair, that grows! Below I am going to guide you through my routine, suggested products, and tell you why you need to use them. I get super annoyed when I see companies that advertise products that give you healthy *LOOKING* hair. I don’t want it to just look healthy, I want it to BE healthy.
FIRST we are going to start from the inside. All external health and beauty issues come from within, so… we should treat them internally. There are a lot of supplements out there that are amazing for some, but not for another. This too can be a trial and error process. One that is favorited amongst many is the PHYTO Phytophanere supplements. Suggested use is 2 capsules a day, preferably in the A.M. Get These Supplements For $60.00 Here. Color/Processing I can’t stress the importance of having a good & knowledgable colorist. Everyone’s hair is different and you need a process that is specifically and safely designed for your hair. When I caught wind of the go-to salon for blonde color here in LA, I couldn’t wait to get in. Nine Zero One Salon is located at 8469 Melrose Place in West Hollywood, CA. Don’t be surprised if you have a little wait to get in amidst the stars who trust the pros here, but it’s well worth it. Melissa Trujillo is my girl there, so if you land in her chair, tell her I sent ya!
