Grace Coddington Launches a Fragrance with Comme des Garçons
Grace Coddington may have put some pressure on the brakes of being the creative director at Vogue, but she is far from slowing down in the industry. She can be found traipsing around with various self-induced projects that are celebratory of her life and her own aesthetic. She released a book on her career from 2002 to present, and her memoir has been undergoing a slow process onto the silver screen. After her extensive time at Vogue, Coddington has only recently begun to work with clients away from the magazine, which marks another step for her. And now she is adding yet another notch to her busy life, by collaborating with Comme des Garçons in order to create her own fragrance.
So far, there aren’t many details on the matter. It will be dubbed Grace by Grace Coddington, and the bottle itself being in the shape of none other than a cat. The bottle was created by Fabien Baron, iconic editorial director for Interview and art director. The result is actually rather sophisticated with a hint of a vintage vibe, despite the form, but of course it is not without whimsy. The shape of the cat was actually made to mirror one of the fashion icon’s own sketches.
With her time and influence regarding the fashion industry, Coddington has earned her right in selecting exactly what she wants for her breakout fragrance. She has spent nearly 60 years changing the industry and running her empire, so it is likely it wouldn’t rightly matter what the bottle looked like or what fragrance it contained; the perfume is going to sell. But in this case, the scent seems as though it will be lovely.
It is “Amber crystal-spiked Moroccan rose absolute,” according to Coddington, and also peach blossom and white musk. To create her fragrance, Coddington turned to memories of roses. The scent of her mother’s garden and of the Red Rose Floris eau de toilette she wore when she was just starting out as a model were the leading inspirations for the floral bouquet.
The fragrance will hit Dover Street Market exclusively, starting on April 19. This is one fragrance that is going to be a hot product. Not only will fans be able to purchase a perfume created by such an iconic woman in the fashion industry, but there is a good chance it will smell like a lovely rose garden. On top of all this, it’s being sold in a cute cat-shaped bottle, based on Coddington’s own doodles, to boot.
