Zayn Malik To Design a Capsule Collection for Versus Versace
There is a new fashion power couple in the industry, and it sees Zayn Malik and Donatella Versace working together on a new Versus Versace capsule collection. The 23-year-old singer, heartthrob, former member of the One Direction, fashion enthusiast and Gigi Hadid’s boyfriend has, in fact, just been tapped by the Italian designer to co-create women’s and men’s capsule collections that will be available for purchase starting from May of next year (Malik has no former fashion designing education).
Part of the Zayn x Versus lineup’s profits will go to charity, and Zayn Malik will also star in two different Versus Versace ad campaigns next year.
“Versus is the rock and roll soul of the Versace family and has always been associated with music,” declared Donatella Versace during an interview after her Versus Versace spring/summer 2017 runway show at London Fashion Week. “Everyone from the Foo Fighters to Lenny Kravitz has played at the shows, and it is all about rebellion. For me, Zayn was the perfect fit.”
During an interview with Vogue, Donatella clarified why she specifically looked for Zayn Malik after that matchmaker runway show, and it was basically all about communication and daring innovations. “Why I want Zayn now: He can make me talk to his followers. I want to listen to the language, I want to learn. I want to know what they think, what they like. This is a new generation, [which] if I do not go through someone like Zayn I will never reach,” she explained.
Donatella Versace’s decision is undeniably a good, strategic move, especially after Anthony Vaccarello’s departure as Versus Versace creative director in April. Malik, who surely has a very distinctive taste and personality, will help lessen the distances between the fashion house and its audience, as well as ferry new potential clients to Versace’s stores.
“Versus is everything that the Versace line is not. It is loud, it is rebellious — I don’t want shoppers buying both from Versus and Versace. The houses have different souls,” Donatella Versace told the New York Times.
Introvert, if not elusive, Zayn Malik still doesn’t want to count his chickens before they hatch at the moment, and has only partially commented on his new appointment as a creative designer.
“I think Versus has always been a very cool brand and is a great brand for me and for people in my generation,” Mr. Malik wrote in an official note. “I’ve always wanted to design clothes and there’s no brand I’d rather design for than Versus. I like to learn about things I’m interested in and I enjoy being around creative people so I think it will be cool. The bonus is that I get to collaborate with Donatella, whom I love and admire. I know we’ll create something amazing,” he synthetically declared.
