Alice + Olivia Spring/Summer 2016 Collection – New York Fashion Week
Stacey Bendet’s “Oh My Goddess” Alice + Olivia spring 2016 collection was the celebration of the inner goddess that lives in every woman. Being in her ninth month of pregnancy and due to give birth to her third daughter any time soon, the designer was sporting a black mini-dress and five inch platform knee high boots for the presentation of her collection. Inspired by the desert palette, flowers and butterflies the collection reminded us a chapter from “one thousand and one nights”. We could imagine Queen Scheherazade being dressed in some of the outfits that had a touch of mystery and romanticism.
The Alice + Olivia spring 2016 collection was so vibrant that we could almost smell the desert flowers and see butterflies flying. The eye capturing splendid range of fiery colors, like red, orange, marigold, honey, and more muted shades of sand, ivory, cream, granola, not to forget the eternal blacks and whites, made our hearts miss a beat. Bendet used rich looking garments, silks and flowing chiffons, oriental embroidery, Hispanic frills, Seventies-inspired style flares, bold and aye-popping flowers creating one diverse collection for romantic girls. Different epochs were united and offered a rich variety of outfits for different times of the day and occasions. The bohemian romantic vibe resonated in the billowing maxi dresses with bold floral patterns, embroidered skirts with fringe details, ponchos with large eye-catching flowers and sheer chiffon blouses with voluminous sleeves. The ivory fringed vest, and sand colored suede jacket paired with a fringed skirt Aztec patterned dress embodied the reincarnation of the Indian American spirit.
The more delicate outfits showcased played on the antique Greek theme with flowing pearl gowns in chiffon with cascading riffles. In addition, Alice + Olivia introduced an amazing line of denim into the collection – flared jeans that had been hand embroidered with delicate floral patterns. Apparently the designer wanted to revive the Seventies hype and make bell-bottom pants a statement item once again.
Stunning was also the accessories complementing the outfits. The footwear for spring 2016 is all a fashionista desires – lace-up knee high flat gladiator sandals, ankle high heeled sandals in soft suede with flirty fringes, embroidered espadrilles, wedge sandals and all these in different colors and textured leathers. As for the handbags, the designer apparently decided to please all the tastes and offered a wide range of shapes and sizes, including wristlet, messenger and bucket bags. Our hearts melted at the sight of the large hobo bags with the hanging fringe detail in muted sand and fire.
Having seen a lot of minimalist beauty looks recently on the catwalks we were not surprised by Bendet’s interpretation. It’s all about fresh shiny skin, with metallic eyeliner and nude lips. In general, the new Alice + Olivia collection was feminine, playful and sophisticated. Inspired by Bendet’s imaginary desert, we can imagine her young playful “goddesses” running up and down the dunes in those amazing hand embroidered skirts and dresses.
