Met Gala 2016 Red Carpet Fashion: Manus x Machina
The opening of the Costume Institute’s annual fashion exhibit held in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City is not any black-and-white issue. Apart from those luxury-reading haute couture exemplars usually available to be marveled at for a couple of months since May, there is something even more exciting about this entire cannonade. And the name of the game is its inauguration, well, to be more precise, the grandiose and pompous Met Gala, the annual fundraising event for the benefit of the museum and the annual live fashion exhibition with the marvelous gowns not placed somewhere on museum display stands absolutely stock-still, but rather moving, maneuvering and undulating on the most prominent figures of fashion arena, cinematography and the music world.
May 2, 2016 saw yet again a powerful army of celebrities walking down the red carpet decked out into some fashion-meets-technology fascinators. Know why? That’s because Manus x Machina: Fashion in Age of Technology was the theme for the 2016 Met Gala, meant to blur all the boundaries between handmade Haute Couture and machine-made ready-to-wear, taking them to a pretty mélange category. The Met Ball 2016 with Co-Chairs Idris Elba, Jonathan Ive, Taylor Swift, and Anna Wintour, and Honorary Chairs Nicolas Ghesquière, Karl Lagerfeld, and Miuccia Prada definitely gained its point showing off high dose of futuristic metallic silver and gold, new-generation laser-cut and 3D techniques and of course, traditional intricate hand beading and embroidery. Take several minutes to take a tour through the avenues of the Met Gala 2016 red carpet fashion browsing through our list of the best-dressed celebrities.
1. Poppy Delevingne in Marchesa
The 29-year-old top model and Chanel ambassador Poppy Delevingne embarked on defining word for word what really means ‘unrivalled’. And we are to put the blame not only on her innate allure but also on that Marchesa bejeweled silver gown hugging her body and scintillating to all directions. The scandalous plunging neckline, sheer side panels, cascading down fringed tiers of the dress and most importantly, the fact of her being braless were enough to label Poppy as “seductively danger zone”.
2. Rita Ora in Vera Wang
The British beauty Rita Ora, who has recently also been among the suspected figures standing behind Beyonce’s “Becky with the good hair”, squashed all the rumors yesterday evening taking a friendly selfie with Beyonce. Donning a Vera Wang silver feathered gown with illusion cutouts everywhere on the bustier and with a floor-sweeping train, she seemed to be on the verge of opening her wings and flying up the sky.
3. Gigi Hadid in Tommy Hilfiger
Though the blonde beauty Gigi Hadid with blue angelic eyes was first and foremost in the limelight through her debut official appearing with her boyfriend Zayn Malik, her Tommy Hilfiger futuristic halter-neck dress was no less attention-grabbing. If not that tulle grey overlay, with the all sequined corset silhouette peeping underneath, Gigi would have been oozing out burlesque girl vibes.

No ifs, buts or ands here, it is the American actress Claire Danes, who sashayed down the red carpet in a Zac Posen powdery blue Disney-inspired strapless ball gown. It left all sweetly smiling under the bright lights of the red carpet but then saucer-eyed and flabbergasted when quite unexpectedly the gown was lit up inside the Gala’s darkness morphing into a fragile piece of crystal. Truly, no other better way of elucidating the happening of Manus x Machina!

The Grammy-winner Taylor Swift was not only one of the night’s co-chairs but also one of the cliché-breakers asking all and sundry rhetorically “why not open legs in this techno age?” Her Louis Vuitton mini dress with layered hems and sensual waistline cutouts was even more flattered through the matching lace-up gladiator heels.
