#DGTropicoItaliano: Dolce & Gabbana Spring/Summer 2017 Collection
Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana’s massimalismo just overwhelmed this sunny Sunday at Milan Fashion Week with bedazzling, mix-and-matched patterns, treating us to the mesmerizing 91-look Dolce & Gabbana spring/summer 2017 ready-to-wear collection, dubbed #DGTropicoItaliano. As usual, the creative director duo told an entire story with their runway collection, making us grin from ear to ear with fascination at the sight of those scoops of ice cream imprinted on the sensual dresses.
Extremely diverse and wearable at the same time, Dolce & Gabbana’s spring 2017 collection significantly varies in styles, with its pieces still being linked to each other through the designer duo’s signature maximalism. Although not all of the proposals featured extravagant patches of patterns juxtaposed with each other, the Italian designers managed to always keep up with their whimsical signature style by adding exaggerated cuts and lines to the ‚Äö√Ñ√∂‚àö√ë‚àö‚â§sober’ pieces, making them look fabulously maximalist anyways.
Along with a fanciful color palette of yellows, pinks, reds and greens, which often got worn all at once in multidimensional patters, the artistic duo opted for total white and total black ensembles too. While the former range of looks, filtered through Dolce & Gabbana’s maximalist lens, got embellished with oversized puffed-up shoulders, similar to those we saw this morning at Marni, the black, sensual proposals were standard Dolce & Gabbana, with their signature, Sicilian-inspired sensual lace fabrics sinuously wrapping up the body.
Sicily was not, however, the sole motif at the core of this collection. A jocose lit-up sign emblazoned the runway show with Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana’s “Tropico Italiano’, which instantly put us in a nostalgic ‚Äö√Ñ√∂‚àö√ë‚àö‚â§vacation in Italy’ mood. To emphasize the summery vibes, the show was filled with fun glowing palm trees, sand and even a ‚Äö√Ñ√∂‚àö√ë‚àö‚â§Cocco Bello’ stand.
As for the pieces, Dolce & Gabbana embodied the whole ‚Äö√Ñ√∂‚àö√ë‚àö‚â§fun-in-the-sun’ concept by focusing on street style staples, with denim aplenty, fresh varsity jackets and oversized sweatshirts dominating the scene. The collection drifted from more playful to sultrier attire too, yet with the latter being, surprisingly, in a minority.
As usual, the Dolce & Gabbana spring/summer 2017 collection was heavy on sumptuous patterns, which this time around saw religious motifs intertwined with summer-ready Italian-inspired decorations, such as sunflowers, gelatos, tomato sauces, bottles of vinegar and oil, roses and Mediterranean fish. As for the latter, we may now declare fish-themed prints are officially trending next summer, along with majorette-inspired ensembles.
Considered by many as the house of contrasting themes and patterns, the Dolce & Gabbana spring 2017 runway show surprised us onlookers, as well as those who were attending the show, with majorette-inspired pieces, here refined with patches of musical notes and musical instruments turned into quirky handbags. Cascades of sequined appliqués, along with lightweight palazzo pants, helped the collection’s motifs literally shine through the lineup, illuminating the catwalk with their shiny patterns.
To further reinforce both the ‚Äö√Ñ√∂‚àö√ë‚àö‚â§summer is a state of mind’ and the majorette themes, Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana brought professional dancers onstage, who joined models of the moment Stella Maxwell, Elsa Hosk, Taylor Hill, Sara Sampaio, Hailey Baldwin, and Romee Strijd on the runway, as soon as the show drew to a close.
Whimsical, exaggerated and fun, we predict the Dolce & Gabbana spring/summer 2017 collection will be one of Milan fashion Week’s most talked about runway shows!
