Karen Walker’s Spring 2017 RTW Line Was Inspired by Salvador Dal‚Äö√†√∂‚Äö√¢‚Ć’s Pet
Karen Walker‘s spring 2017 ready-to-wear collection is an ocelot inspired line. That is very interesting, but designers and really all artistic types can be inspired by anything. In this case however, the designer was inspired by a very specific ocelot ” Babou, the pet ocelot of famed surrealist Salvador Dali. By choosing a character as connected as Babou, she is obviously going to include elements of surrealism, as well as those were the surrounding Babou was constantly shown in.
In the Karen Walker spring/summer 2017 ready-to-wear line, the surrealist background beautifully offsets each individual look. Babou’s face is shown on several pieces in the collection, juxtaposed against a richly colored or light background depending on the piece.
One is a gray sweatshirt, another a dark blue t-shirt with Babou’s face beneath the word ‚Äö√Ñ√∂‚àö√ë‚àö‚â§Runaway’ and another shirt that shows off ruffle-ended sleeves. These ruffled sleeves make several additional appearances throughout the collection as well, an interesting detail that is appreciated in the overall look of the line.
All designers believe that their vision is unique in some way, their process as individualistic as their own personalities. This is true, and each individual addition to fashion allows for others who are not able to design to still adorn themselves in a way that gives their outward appearance the true aesthetic they desire. For those who are slightly more anomalistic, there are the unique styles of Karen Walker.
A mix of silhouettes provides an array of outfits that are not boring or standard in the least, and still thankfully wearable at the most. Sheer overlays, ruffled sleeves and varying lengths are provided in the several dresses, and bold prints featuring beautiful birds adorn a jumpsuit and several dresses. The shoes used in the collection are all loafer reminiscent in colors of gold, cream and midnight blue.
It was obvious the line would be interesting given her choice of inspiration. Babou was constantly seen in the presence of Salvador Dali during the Sixties, in a studded collar and on a leash and was described by the famed artist. During a meal in a Manhattan restaurant, another person dining there was uncomfortable and alarmed at the ocelot’s presence. Calmly, Salvador Dali explained that Babou was actually a normal cat that was ‚Äö√Ñ√∂‚àö√ë‚àö‚â§painted over in an op art design’ by Salvador himself.
Babou gained a lot of interest back then and it is no wonder that Karen Walker’s spring and summer 2017 ready-to-wear line was inspired by such a well loved and beautiful creature. As such, this collection is sure to be well loved and is most certainly its own kind of beautiful.
