Free People’s Summer 2016 Outfits Recall the ’90s
“Natural Instinct” is Free People‘s June 2016 lookbook, and it features a plethora of fabulously stylish boho-chic outfit ideas for women this season that already retail at FreePeople.com. Cute and fierce model Jasmine Sanders fronted the lookbook, showing what it looks like to work these outfits this summer, and was photographed by Harper Lee Smith. There are many other looks there, however, that are the stock images used on Free People’s website.
The lookbook was all about bringing ’90s fashion to modern times in the most successful way, often with the classic Free People bohemian signature, and they made it easy to simply scroll through, follow along, and then buy the ensembles for yourself. Many people look back at the ’90s as a time of poor fashion or one with little influence on the fashion industry. However, there were actually some trends that occurred at that time that make it easy to give a modern interpretation.
Quite a few of the ensembles in Free People’s summer 2016 lookbook are simple enough to not need a decade backstory, but that’s sort of half the fun of trying out outfits like this, showing their origins in fashion history. A cropped boot-cut jean paired with a loose-fitting, puffy sleeved top, slitted ankle boots, and a flat-brimmed hat shows the easier-going side of this lookbook, with simple choices that are still inherently ’90s-based.
Cropped jeans are nothing new in many fashion decades, but the loose fit, the high waist, and the shade of color are unmistakable. Other casual outfits came in the form of embroidered dresses, slip dresses, denim (in many forms), and gladiators. Chain pins, stacked belts, studs, chokers, hoop earrings, and other leather accessories were created to finish off these looks, and are what ultimately catapult you back into the ’90s.
It’s actually rather easy to scroll through the lists and find the styles that are more ’90s based than others. All you really need to do is look at the outfit, and ask yourself, “Would Britney Spears have worn that?” Because in many cases here, the answer would be yes, especially with pieces such as the “Like a Star” top, which is a white Victorian-styled shirt with slight bell sleeves.
Another irresistible style from the ’90s that of course had to find its way in Free People’s summer 2016 outfit selection is the denim maxi skirt. This trend seeped into the ’00s, and never quite dissipated from fashion culture, but its roots are back in this decade.
For the more elegant side of things, Free People boosted the idea of the halter neckline. I may have been very young at the end of the ’90s, but I remember growing up with a burning desire to wear a tropical halter dress; to see that style here and alive today brings back that sentiment again.
With their rendition of the dress, the colors and flowers are smooth and elegant, the cutouts at the side (which actually wrap to the back in a large tie) and leg slit bring a level of sensuality, and it was created in a breezy fabric, just in time for resort-season.
