Peter Som Spring/Summer 2015 Collection – New York Fashion Week
When asked to describe his style in three words, New York based fashion designer Peter Som, who has already managed to dress celebrities like Elizabeth Banks, Anne Hathaway, Rachel McAdams, Eva Mendes and many others, chose three c-s: crisp, classic and clean. Som himself thinks that the clothes he designs stand out from the crowd because of their “effortless elegance and refined sexiness”. Throughout years, the designer has managed to create a unique style that can be described as a combination of sporty and elegant. After all, who said that casual cannot look elegant?
Knowing that Som was a big enthusiast of bright colors, large floral patterns, sporty blazers, high waisted bikinis and the ‚Äö√Ñ√∂‚àö√ë‚àö‚â§60s style in general, we had an overall idea what the Peter Som spring/summer 2015 collection presented at NYFW 2015 would look like. Although the apparent vibrant colors were missing, we still found ourselves journeying through fashion decades. The palette of neutral color tones turned out to be very easy on the eye. The strong, military green, which we have already seen on Nicholas K models, was present in Som’s spring/summer collection as well. The color was prevailing at the first part of the show in forms of floral patterns on white stand collar dresses and blouses with button closures, on swimsuits that were paired with white nylon coats, on high neckline mini dresses, strapless tops, baggy trousers and so on. The designer’s generous use of fabric when creating flowing coats and jackets made the pieces even more timeless and creative. Pairing green, dark blue and white/beige together proved to be a smart approach to creating images of classy and elegant women.
The middle part of the Peter Som spring/summer 2015 collection show saw many stripes, both vertical and horizontal. Here the reigning color was the white, or rather the contrast between black and white. The exquisite range of short pleated striped skirts paired with simple button down blouses, wrap dresses that put the emphasis on the slim waists and beautiful shoulders of the models, asymmetrical skirts falling below knees combined with high collar blouses and loosely knit thin sweaters and black net-like shirts worn over white dresses exuded femininity and grace.
As the show proceeded, the colors got warmer and a little brighter, floral patterns – more vibrant and lively. Warm orange looked absolutely perfect with strong green, white and dark blue and made high waisted bikini bottoms, pleated skirts, baggy pants and deep V-cut maxi dress (we so dig this one!) even more gorgeous and mesmerizing. Paring pale red, green, dark blue and white with pink was probably a bold move by Som, but to us those colors went perfectly well together and “did the trick”.
Oh and the last part of the Peter Som spring/summer 2015 collection show? Well, it totally blew our minds! Being palpably different than the rest of the collection, it was shiny and glittery and shimmery. Oh would we feel like stars wearing them!
